I saw Steve Swallow with Gary Burton and that was the first time I ever had a bassist as a musical hero. I bought a bunch of Carla Bley just because he was on them. Now she's no slouch either, of course. But for some reason, his playing really resonates with me.

I remember the original Real Book guys during my Berklee days in the 70's when Metheny was there. Steve and Mitch. Anyway, the Gary Burton Quintet was all around us then, including the great writing of Steve Swallow and Carla Bley. Many of their pieces were featured in the early editions of the RB. Falling Grace, Olhos Del Gato, etc.

I have a tour in 010 with Steve. I recorded with him 2 times before. It was difficult to explain in a graceful way just how much he meant to me as a player. He's quietly brilliant. His time is so solid, yet individual. His note choices, are spontaneous, but feel like the foundations of a building that was built for the sole purpose of others to run around free in.
I'm totally stoked i'm on tour with him.

Thanks for a great site Adam.

Mike

Great news on that tour Mike. Who else is onboard? I dabbled in bass for almost 10 years before switching to guitar and Steve is one of my musical heroes. I unfortunately couldn't catch the tour he did with Mike Gibbs about 18 months ago but I did get to see him with Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard and Billy Drummond a couple of years ago. A wonderful musician.

Hopefully that 4tet will have a London date. I promised Adam copies of a bootleg DVD I have of him with Jerry Bergonzi and Mick Goodrick ages ago and must get around to sending them to him. I've seen Gwilym a couple of times with Kenny Wheeler - great player.

I remember an album he did playing standards. Can't find it. A friend had it on CD about 15 years ago...need to find that again.

EDIT - Bad memory. I was thinking for the CD BUNNY BRUNEL / MIKE STERN / BILLY CHILDS / VINNIE COLAIUTA : DEDICATION

I saw him this August at NGW's Jazz Summit. He was with Sco and Bill Stewart. They did a show and Master's Class. Sco frequently redirected questions from the crowd to Steve. Steve was very lengthy in his answers, but boy was it good stuff. Wonderful player, wonderful human being.

The only connection I can think of is that Hiram Bullock played with both of them at various times.

Mike, what's it like to play with John Taylor. I'm a huge fan of his. He played on Bill Connors solo record "Swimming with a hole in my body".
