Talk me out of a '72 Super Reverb

Ok, so I'm really getting interested in a vintage Super Reverb. I've found a couple of '72's on craigslist for a solid price
so SR owners chime in!
I've done a decent amount of research, but i still haven't haven't nailed down the "bad" years for these amps
It's my understanding that 72's to 69's are pretty durn close to a blackface and if desired i can mod it to a blackface circuit with little effort.

anyway, have at it!

What's the solid price? They're great amps, my '64 might be the best amp I own

Get it if it's a good deal. Vintage Fenders are very tough to beat.

As far as I know, '72 would still be a good year for a Super.

I've got a '73 Vibrolux and it's a bitchin' amp indeed. Not blackfaced either.

I've got a '72 SR. They are loud. Very, very loud.
Watch out for the original CTS speakers. The cones
tend to sink back into the frames. A recone will make
them sound good again. The SR is a bit cold sounding
compared to a Vibrolux Reverb, which is lyrical and sweet.
However, the SR's forte is it's penetrating tone at any volume.
I believe John Mayer once said that a SR was too cool for him.
SR's are not a toy. They're a man's amp. They sound big and loud.
Great for Blues, ala SRV.

that's exactly what i'm going for, my current amp (which i would run in tandem with the SR) is very dark, bold, and mid heavy, i love the tone out of it, but often find myself wanting a stronger, more articulate tone counterpart.
the SR's i've played just plain sound HUGE and in a way i could really use!
i'm looking for that big bad tone to counterpart my fat but mellow tone i'm getting with my current set up

Just be sure the amp you choose hasn't been hacked up, and if it were me I would avoid anything with a master volume. Not sure, but I think Fender started using master volume on the big amps around '72-'73.

Any SR is a nice amp. Every SR without master volume is a great amp. A BF SR or a early SF SR could be a stellar sounding amp. If you want that kind of sound then there is no other way. A few times I have thouht about selling mine but howe can you part with one of the greatest blues/soul/rock amps ever? I allways come back to it!

I can't talk you out of it...mine's a '71! I have a 2ohm THD Hotplate I use with mine. If the price is right...get one.

Here is my post of all of the technical stuff with a soundclip.

72 was still a "good year".. My bandmate has a '72 Twin that I've worked on for him. Only minor differences from 'Blackface'.. very easy to do if you like... or maybe it sounds good as-is...

If it's a good price... do it!

It's going to be different than a BF Super Reverb by a good stretch. Maybe that would suit you though, you never know. I think by '72 you're talking different rectifier tube, trannies, cabinet, different voltages, etc. All this adds up to a slightly different tone than a classic BF.
