Used 70's Deluxe Reverb

I have a chance to pick one of these up for $750. I'm pretty broke now but, should I do it? Is it worth it? RI's are going for over $1000 now and I can trade my HRDx towards it. I think it'll be a huge step up, I just hope that it takes my pedals well and doesn't have any major issues and that the tubes and speaker weren't replaced with crap stuff. I also hope the caps aren't blown/have been replaced in the last decade.

Great deal if it's up to snuff. For $750, I'd guess that it needs a little work. If you can swing it, plus potentially a couple hundred for caps, etc. go for it.

My amp search ended when I got my 79 DR. I just had the tremolo fixed and while the tech was in there he touched up a few solder joints and gave it a once over. I'm good for life now!

If it's had a cap job and has good tubes and speaker that's a KILLER deal. Even if it needs a cap job and a few tubes it's a good deal. It will also appreciate in value. A DRRI won't.

I have a 70. I say buy it if it's in good shape. It's my main amp ( I also have a Twin and an old Traynor).

Can you nail down the date?

Early 70's DR's are more valuable than late 70's DR's in similar condition.

codekinesis has vintage fender amp pricing,

check it out, the deal is good but depending on year your saving a few bucks or a couple hundred.

http://codekinesis.mine.nu:3000/price/list_history

the site has them going for $835 to $1098 depending year, and if you need to replace a speaker thats going to be over $100 and components and tubes, might not be such a great bargain. Also can you find a buyer, the old amps are attractive when they are not made now, fender reissuing thess amps really sets a ceiling on what some one will pay, it wont be over the new amps price,

Actually that may not be the case. The DRRI's been out for quite awhile, and the vintage Deluxe Reverbs are some of the most sought after and pricey vintage amps out there. And although there's a reissue Tweed Bassman, vintage tweed Bassman amps are out of sight in price, often going for $8K if they're in great shape.

So this amp sold from under my nose (well, not really, but still). FML.

Thanks for your help though, guys. I know a lot more about pedals than I do about amps so I appreciate any little tidbits I can get.

The search for a Deluxe Reverb/Princeton Reverb continues.

Yep, you'll never make that mistake again

Just about anything under a grand for a quality SFDR in functionally good condition is a pretty good deal, provided tubes are good and the speaker is good. I think I spent about $850 on my beat up '73 and then another $125 on tubes/amp work. Then $200 on a JBL D120F for it... and now I have the second or third best sounding amp on the planet.

Keep your eyes open and be vigilant. Another good one at a reasonable price will appear before too long.

I'm thinking about settling on either a DRRI or PRRI. They're much more readily available, have warranty and are pretty cheap.

What do you guys think about that?
I'm really tired of my HRDx and how it's so freaking ridiculously loud along with the fact that even if I do crank it, it would probably stay clean.

An RI is good but will depreciate in value and it's PCB, which means it's going to be tougher to repair.

The SF, on the other hand, is great. It will appreciate in value, and it's handwired.

If you just want an amp that will work right out of the box, than the reissues may be the way to go. However, when I heard a '67 DR and thought back to my DRRI issue (which I had sold by then), the '67 DR just sounded better, much less harsh in the highs and fuller sounding. That said I have heard some clips where I preferred the reissue.

With the Reissue you will probably have to replace the tubes anyway to get the best tone. I had an older reissue with the Eminence speaker.

So personally I would hold out for a silverface....
