Axe FX ~ Fan-tastic

Can anyone describe their experience swapping out the fan in the Axe-Fx. Was it tough? Expensive? What model fan did you use/purchase? Did it attenuate fan noise a lot?

Thanks !

There are several threads on this over on the axefx forum. I haven't personally done it, but I know several guys over there can help you out

Not sure I feel the need, but in the studio environment I'm really sensitive to noise.

easy... depends on how you mount it... all the way through you will need longer screws... i picked them up at ace hardware. some guys just attach using the bottom hole on the fan, i went throug the top. you might have to tug on the fan a bit to get it to come off, as the posts kind of dig into it.

it's a million times better. should really be done from the factory.

You will need washers too, 2-3 smaller ones or just get the rubber ones you can get when you order from the link below.

You can use the stock screws, but only use the bottom holes on the fan.

With amps you need tubes, cables, pedals.... one quirk of the Axe-FX is that you might want to replace the stock fan. I did.

Not crap, but it's audible in a very quiet room.

Just a general comment on computer fans, bacause many tend to be on the noisy side.

Often the reason that some fans are quieter is because they: don't spin as fast->don't move as much air->don't cool as effectively. Always check with the manufacturer first if you are concerned about the warranty. They usually select fans specifically for the amount of air flow.

The noise would never be noticeable live, and likely not even racked up in the studio, but my little set up has the Axe in a rack right in front of my mixing station.
