I used to have this Carvin...

... and I had a Jackson PC-1 with a flame maple fingerboard... you can see it behind my Koa Charvel.

I love fingerboards with no inlays... particularly if they are rosewood, pau-ferro, or have some really cool colored streaks running through it.

This Redwood Sadowsky from above makes my loins ache.

Here's a stock photo of my Agile Harm I, semi-hollowbody with P-90s, ebony fretboard, grover tuners, and no dots on board (just side markers). Very nice guitar for the money (or any money).

This constitutes "close" - and is the guitar I found I could play w/o inlays...

Here's my fretless warmoth - yeah, I just had to outdo everyone didn't I?

Sorry if the pics aren't the best

I love the look of a no inlay fretboard. When I got my parker years ago I was kinda worried about no fretmarkers, but I don't really miss them at all. It took FAR less time to get used to than I thought. Just so long as it has side dots, I'm cool. I don't need markers on the fretboard itself.

Strangely enough I like a blank fretboard on ebony, very light colored maple (such as birdseye), or highly streaked Rosewood or other exotics. Don't like regular old rosewood boards w/o inlays. Ditto w/ amber/vintage/yellowed maple necks.

Lowden's don't have any fretboard markers.

Woody Mann was playing his during a clinic, which made it really hard to see exactly what he was doing without that visual reference.

McInturff at a practice session:

Melancon:

My old Ibanez (practically no inlay - 2 abalone microdots offset at the 12th):

Hanewinckel:

Eshenbaugh:

Roscoe (long sold):

I also have a '68 Ramirez classical, but that's kind of a given no-inlay situation.

Both of these guitars were custom ordered without inlays. I did play a couple of inlay-less guitars first to ensure I would be able to play a naked fingerboard and was surprised at how comfortable it was. If I need to count frets, the side markers work fine for me.

First guitar was built by Neal Moser and the second one by GMW Guitar Works.
