DIY neck inserts...not easy!
Thought I'd try the neck insert thing using what I could find at Home Depot (1/4-20 threaded inserts). These are difficult to mount squarely, evenly, neatly. YMMV. Practice on some scrap first
. I'm abandoning this mess and fixing it with some plugs

you really need a drill press to do it properly... square mounting/drilling is the key, not to mention a tight fit so that the insert doesn't turn & come out when you unscrew the neck bolt/screw. I got lucky on the one free hand installation I did.

I did have a drill press to line it up. It seemed to have a mind of its own on how the treads wanted to grab the wood, however. I think the size of that insert is too big for finer (guitar) use. Get the kit if you can.

My first choice would be 8-32; my second would be 10-32.
Quarter inch is really getting up there, not much wood left in the heel wid dat. |
