Out of my 4 Floyd Equipped Guitars, 1 Won't Stay in Tune...

I've got 4 guitars with floyds. None of them are floating, they are all flush.

I haven't been able to keep one of them in tune no matter what I do. The other 3 are just fine, so I know I'm not stringing them or setting them up wrong.

After replacing the Ping OFR with a Gotoh, I've narrowed it down to where I think the problem is with or above the nut. In trying to trouble shoot it, I picked the strings behind the nut, depressed the bar, and heard the strings drop in pitch and return back to a different pitch. I tested this out on my other 3, and noticed a small slight drop in pitch that came right back to where it's supposed to as the bar is raised.

I had an extra set of string clamps, so I replaced those with no luck. Any other advice besides replacing the entire nut?

check that the screws that are holding the nut on are tight, the ones that go through the neck loosen all the time

Try replacing the nut. Grooves can be worn in over time.

Bummer. This nut is only like 9 months old.

It is a bummer, but if it is slipping behind the nut, and you already replaced the clamps, the nut would be the next place I would consider.

Good luck!

You might try this.
Find some thin .002 brass shim stock, cut off a little bit, and carefully position it so as to help grip the string but not displace it far from the usual spot, tighten up.

I have used this sort of thing for a related problem but YMMV.

is it a Ping nut ? get the gotoh nut it is the hardest one by far.
The nut on the Wolfgang (I'm guessing as this nut is the worst)is a soft POS and if you are unlucky will last six months.(it is 15" radius so hard to find a replacement for.)

Thanks for the tip Tone_Terrific. I'll see about that.

I have a Gotoh nut, but it's top-mounting, and this is a rear-mounting nut. I'll look around for a Gotoh rear-mount.

My two Peavey Wolfgangs are each 12 years and 10 years old, with their original nuts, and have not had a problem.

You can be lucky but the nut and studs are pitiful .(the bridge its self is good though.)

Perhaps you're thinking of the korean one.

Dunno what brand was on my USA wolfie but i had zero issues when I had it.
Course I'm really not much for dive bombs. I use the trem a lot, but I don't 'dump' the strings.

I'd also try a nut change. Maybe a Schaller will fit?
