So you can't have the bass response of that 100db plus speaker in a lower efficiency unit without sacrificing something else.

To be honest, and this is going to come as a surprise to most...I would have to say that you're going to have to have to cough up the idea of the bass response of the G12H30 RI, cuz I don't know what speaker, including mine, will give that impact without the volume. The H55 would do it, but then you have to sacrifice some of the high end you'd get from the 75hz lead cone that RI has.

A lot of this is subjective, of course, but there's no getting around the magnet weight to add bass, but it also adds volume...so that's where the problem lies.

Tough call, I'm afraid! You'll have to decide what you can live with, and without on this one.
Very cool. I appreciate that....and it makes lots of sense. Thanks!

So, how would the Scumnico differ from the RI H30 I have?

It's going to have the unique alnico midrange tone, a bit less high end than your RI, but a bit less bass response, too, since the magnet is a 40 oz alnico plus the neodymium tip for more magnetic boost to the alnico. It's going to have more bass than an Alnico Blue or Gold, but not be as loud as those. The RI you have is 100db, the Scumnico is around 98db, so figure about 10% less volume when compared to the RI.

Probable make sense to listen to the Scumnico clips Jack Devine did for me, as well as others on the site. Here's the link:
