Why do people chop their head off when doing a Youtube guitar video?

Is it to hide all the ugly contorted faces that they are probably making?

Probably so when you see them gigging out and about, and they sucked on youtube, you can't say......."Hey, I saw that guy on youtube and he sucked"!!!

I saw a DVD based in the 90's during a european tour with phish - whenever fans would ask for photo's with the band, one of them would volenteer to shoot the photo and would intentionally cut off everyone's head.

I think for a lot of people it's because they're using web cams or built into the computer cams that aren't wide angle enough to show the guitar and the person's head in the same shot in a small room, or if they're sitting close enough to the computer to reach the keyboard.

I'm sure some people just don't want to show their faces, too. And if they're good, everyone will be speculating on the web as to who they "really" are.

A reasonable assumption.

My guess is that most people don't consider guitar videos on YouTube a beauty pageant.

There's a "girl" from Japan who makes guitar videos on Youtube playing mostly an SG wearing short skirts and knee socks who never shows her face. I suspect "she" may be one of those ladyboys in reality.

Here's Enter Sandman one of the better ones. Note the vintage SG with lyre tailpiece.

And Crazy Train, which she plays perfectly keeping up with Randy Rhoads note for note while it plays in the background.

And a little EVH

I don't have a problem with not seeing their faces. What I hate is when guys insist on doing pedal demos with their bare feet. Is it really that hard to put some shoes, or at least some socks, on before you shoot the video?

Small webcams.

I think most people think the POINT of these is the playing and the guitar. I don't want to see their tongue hanging out while running through that arpeggio...

what i think is annoying is not the fact that people are cutting their heads off, but that so many people think they need to make their own demo videos for every piece of gear they own. its total useless in most cases because the quality of the audio on the cam usually sucks. its distorted and you can't tell what anything sounds like anyway.
