Is it just me ?

...Or has Gibson bashing become a preferred hobby, for those who have no money ? Or, are they just resentful they because they don't have the time or the patience to find a 'keeper' ? Can anyone help me understand the need to feel a cheap PacRim piece of dreck is as good as a Custom Shop instrument ? I fail to see the light. Must be that all the tone is in the fingers, and certainly not in an exceptional guitar. Can anyone help me understand ?

Thanks. Doesn't the word 'yiddish' have 2 d's?

In response to the other thread asking if "a tricked-out Agile is as good as a Gibson?"

No. Not even close.

That said, Gibson has certainly churned out some real dogs over the "Henry dynasty". You have to kiss a disproportionately high number of frogs before you find a prince.

And...yes....2 D's in Yiddish

Thanks, Fred. Glad the new sig meets with your approval. I have finally hit some significant progress. Hope this finds you well.

I am thinking that compared to when I was growing up with Norlin, GMI is rocking the house, these days. They have hit several 'out of the park'. I think the frog analogy is par for the course. If you want a really nice guitar, you have to play a lot of them. I've been dealing with that process since 1972.

Your welcome Paul. Other than being laid up(back, elbow, shoulder and liver problems), I'm good, lol. Hope your well!

I agree...I think Gibson is making some fantastic instruments these days. I couldn't imagine playing without one. I've found my keepers, so I am done.

But isn't that sort of the point? Finding the keepers, IMO, with recent-production Gibsons is harder than, say, finding a nice '64 Gibson. In that era, it's hard to find a bad one.

I haven't picked up a new Gibson in the last 10 years that wasn't begging for fret (re)work...

Yet, pick up a new, off-the-rack Martin and 9 times out of 10 it will amaze you.

Last labor day, I found an 1936 RI Advanced Jumbo (made in Bozeman,Montana) they had just put out for the weekend sale (at GC). I played it, and brought Florida Sam down to check it out. It's amazing, truly an exceptional guitar. I bought my third Gibson. I just sold one I have had for several years, I never bonded with it. Nothing to do with the way it played. I just get the same process going on with 'Plain Jane' on electric.

Very cool. I'm still looking for a nice Gibby acoustic for my girlfriend(she plays as well).
As far as Plain Jane goes....you best keep her!

Maybe you're just seeing the posts as "bashing" Gibson when they are not.

I think Gibson guitars are great, but they are over-priced; that's the only thing that's kept me from buying one in all the years I've been playing.

You might think that saying they are over-priced is bashing them but the CEO himself admitted many times to raising the prices of Gibson guitars to increase perceived value and increase sales. A quote from him in USA Today: "I said I'm just going to double the prices on a lot of models. I actually tested it and got an inverse price curve. Basically it showed that every time I raised prices a certain amount, volume would go up." Many MBA programs use Gibson as a case study because of this. I applaud their success as a business, but still they are overpriced. It's no different that designer jeans; the quality is no better than a pair of Levis, but the price can be four times or more greater.

In my opinion, there are better values to be had in the price range of a Gibson guitar. The increase of price alone hasn't changed my "perceived value" of the guitar. For someone else, they might see the value and there is nothing wrong with that.

None of these statements are bashing.

One interesting quote in the above referenced interview that reminded me of a comment in the recent Gibson shirt price thread: "The other company I look at and has very close parallels is Harley-Davidson. It's another great American institution. In fact, it's uncanny the parallels that our two companies share in different marketplaces."

I don't know about the acoustics, it's seems they need to be taken on a case by case basis, still Bozeman is cranking out some significant product. Next time you hit Elderly, have a look.

I almost forgot (fire up the trumpets), I swapped a 2003 Fender for a reconditioned, 1959 Gibsonette GA-8. It rocks.
