King Of Tone is on my throne

I did my time and finally received my KOTv4 with the high gain red channel from Mike a few days ago. I was originally thinking it might knock my Tim off the board, after all they both have 2 switches and 6 knobs, how different could they be?

All joking aside, I have an 8-loop selector with my Tim for rhythm in one loop and my Microvibe>Timmy>Zen>CarbonCopy for leads in another. The thing I love about the Zendrive is the mid punch...not like a TS, more like a kick drum! Dynamic and deep. The KOT has that, real good. Coupled with the boost channel, which I think has more of a raw vibe to it, it replaced the Timmy>Zen and gave a real smoothness to the overdrive. It worked flawlessly on a recording session I did the other day, and I have a few gigs coming up that will really tell the tale. We'll see if it stays. Nothing seems to knock the Tim off of my board.

Overall I'm thoroughly impressed with it. I've messed with all the dip switches and trim pots and found I liked it stock best. It really is all that and I'm sure you won't see it on the Emporium or Ebay for a profit anytime soon.

Kudos to Mike for a truly superior product. My first Analogman product, and if this is any indication, it won't be my last. If I didn't have to wait 2 years, that would've been ok too. He must be busy.

Question.....When you say you like stock,,does that mean stock like mine or stock highgain if that makes sense/? So you can switch the high gain back to normal?

I just got my KOTv4 with high gain on both sides, and the Clone Chorus 2 days ago.

I have to say they are without a doubt the consummate example of professional engineering and tone.

I'm always GASsing for new pedals, but from now on, I'm only going to try AnalogMan stuff first.

Next I'm going to get Mike's analog delay. I can hardly wait!!!

I just got my high gain on both sides KoT a week ago and found I am running OD on both sides with different amount of OD and a slight eq change. I have a Sex Drive so the clean boost (which I really loved) was redundant and at the moment I still have my OCD v4 I now use cranked up for distortion.

I am expecting my Timmy on Wed or Thursday, so we will see if it knocks the OCD or the KoT off. I will never sell the KoT as even if it is off the board it will be my grab and go blues pedal/board. I am not one to stack pedals as I run my non-master amp into natural OD.

Ok, I've had it a few weeks now and can give a better review.

It friggin' smokes! My Tim is for rhythm, and it can't be beat, but my KoT is now my go-to lead tone and it's the best I've had. It's incredibly dynamic and really cuts through on stage. Probably the most amp-like pedal on the board...it really sounds like a hard-pushed amp through my Matchless set to clean. It's hard to find smooth and dynamic in the same drive pedal, but Mike did it. I've been getting a lot of compliments on my tone lately, and the KoT is the reason why.

It is amazing tone machine. With the high gain option, can you still get the other setting with the switches on the red channel?

As I stated in my earlier theard about my KOT V4 Red Side Hi Gain mod arriving last last week, I love it. It makes an already great pedal an almost perfect pedal. I only have the Hi Gain on the Red side....but right now if I had to do a gig with only one pedal (Other than a tuner), I'd take the KOT...it now covers THAT WIDE A RANGE of OD sounds.

If I'm not diming my red side anyways, do I need the extra gain mod?

Probably not, although it's nice to know that extra bit is there if you ever do need it.

Yes, probably not...but if you do get it you don't loose any of the sweetness at the pre-dimed level plus you get a little bit more.

Alright, so there are about a dozen threads regarding the high gain KoT, so I thought I'd revive one rather than start a new one.

Coot Tone, you were right when you first told me about the mod! FAN-FRIGGIN-TASTIC!

As the "self-appointed spokesperson" for the KoT high gain mod, Coot Tone has already said in various threads everything I would say about the mod, so I'll keep it short. Here's the bottom line:

Absolutely screaming tones...with my amp on 3.5! Woody, gritty, spongy without sloppiness, singing without being overly compressed, touch responsive, volume responsive, relentlessly tight bass, musical trebles, and thick yet transparent mids. Then I boosted it with the fuzz face side of the killer Skinbender Skin Pimp made for me...and laughed out loud! I just kept nudging the pedals' volume knobs up and up until I realized that my ears were ringing and my neighbors were probaby planning an "unfortunate accident" for me.

The unmodded KoT knocked two of the best drive pedals I've ever played off my board, and now I'm fairly sure there's at least one more whose days are numbered.

The KoT is certainly not for everyone, and neither is the mod, for that matter. But for me and my music, I just died and went to tone heaven.

I also want to give a shout-out to Mike Piera. Besides making some of the best gear out there, he has been responsive to emails, and had a blazing turnaround time on my mod. My KoT was out of my hands for just six days, including at least two days shipping on each end AND a weekend in between! Thanks a lot, Mike.
