Spontaneous SG headstock crack

My friend’s teenage son has a Gibson SG. Apparently after owning it less than a year it began to crack near the headstock. This crack continued to grow (and he continued to play the guitar – admittedly dropping at one point, well after the crack had opened). This is what it looks like now. Suggestions?? Is this a warranty issue?

Thanks,

My guess it's be a warranty issue, contact Gibson. Now I am not implying anything, but having teenage sons myself, getting the whole story is difficult at times.

My concerns would be "continued to play it" and "admittedly dropped it". If he can get Gibson to cover it, good for him. If not, it is a fairly easy repair, and will leave it stronger than it was to begin with. But I think the kid needs a tele.

Yeah... They do that. I highly doubt it'll count as a warranty repair. The good news is it looks like a good candidate for repair. Should be cheap.

This has been an issue with Gibson headstocks since the 50's. One drop, and a crack like that is not at all uncommon. A good luthier can do the repair without a problem... I'm no expert, but I've heard if a headstock repair is done right, it can be as solid or even moreso than it was originally.

As far as warranty goes... I'd honestly be surprised if Gibson covered it, but I'd love to know how it turns out.

If it did truly crack on it's own, you would think they would fix it.

I'm betting it "began to crack" right after he whacked the headstock on something or dropped it.

If nothing else, at least it's an easy repair.

You looked at it funny. That's all it takes. Fortunately, that looks like clean, easy crack.

Definitely looks to be dropped but the good news there's a lot of gluing surface to make a good repair.

Any guitar luthier worth his salt has seen and repaired lots of those.
The resulting headstock is typically more stable than it was before the break...

Put a couple drywall screws through it and tell the kid to be more careful.
