BEST BUY has Gibson, Fender and Marshall!.

Stopped at the Best Buy around Germantown Town Parkway in Memphis today..The better half was getting her son a lap top for graduation...while she was checking out the computers I looked up and noticed a huge department: MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS....Walked in and the whole back wall was covered in Fender, Gibson and Epiphone, ..52 Tele Reissue, 50 and 60 Strat Reissue's, A couple of Eric Johnson models, A Couple of Pauls, SG's, some Epiphone Les Pauls, Fender Amps ( Twins, Super Reverb, etc) an acoustic room with a few low end Martins and Yamaha, the full line of Boss pedals, some MXR pedals...Some Marshall Amps, every brand of string you can imagine, cords, straps, picks, lots of stuff....the salesman told me something like 88 stores were taking on the "MUSICAL INSTRUMENT" department...kind of weird going to a place where you could buy a Big Screen TV and a Les Paul at the same time...

Our local Best Buy has really stepped up to the plate and is going directly after GC, which is located a couple of hundred yards away.

Seems like it will be good for our wallets but bad for the smaller stores.

I can't imagine the 19 year old college kid being able to answer the tougher questions about the gear. We could start a thread called..."Stump the Best Buy Musical Instrument Salesman".

The three small shops that I go to are always happy to match or beat GC prices. Odds are they would do the same for Best Buy prices. The service and knowledge level definitely blows away GC and Best Buy. You can guess where I take my cash.

the mentality being "whatever sells....sell it". which is cool, but i always thought musicians should run music stores.
i'd never buy an instrument from a best buy or GC for that matter.
i don't think corporate music stores will ever work.

Do they let you try the gear? I can't imagine trying to buy an appliance when there's a kid playing Eruption 20 feet away.

You have to ask them before you try the electric guitars.. They have a sign hung in the middle of the guitars, which honestly, is quite hard to see. But, I like the sales people at Best Buy better they may not be more knowledgeable, but they are nicer and more friendly.

Im 19 and I've been on TGP for a while just reading and researching about different gear, Im pretty sure I would be more than able to answer gear questions .

Now, would I want to work at a instrument store? Nope not anymore.

Uh... what? Why not?

Maybe Best Buy employees aren't really suited to answer questions about guitar gear (and they're not, I stopped in and listened to one of these guys try to sell an acoustic to this lady... hilarious...) but I'm not sure it has anything to do with " 19-year-old college kids".

Use the internet to answer your questions. I've gone car shopping before and the salesmen had no clue what he was talking about. Same with computers. I take every piece of information that I haven't researched myself with a grain of salt when I'm buying anything.

They recently opened a Best Buy in Waxahachie, TX..
The closest GC is about 50 miles away.

I brought it to the manager's attention that they messed up not putting the guitars in this "captive" buyer's market.

I went to one in New Orleans and was impressed at the "real gear" they had.
Then I went to this one in Memphis last week. Impressive lot of stuff! And - they approach it like Mars - wail away!
Great selection too. I noticed they had maybe a dozen various power amp in the PA section and some flamey Pauls on the rack.
This store is only half a mile from the GC (who put a few other stores out of business).
