I love relics so there

You know I have to laugh about the animosity some people on this board have about relicing. To me it's no different than breaking in a baseball glove to give it that worn in feel.

Frankly I like having a guitar that feels broken in. I really don't care for shiny new guitars with their gleaming hardware and their reflective coatings. But I don't criticize folks who I've seen playing guitars that look like they've spent their life in a case.

The bottom line is this. Most of the vintage worn guitars out there have changed hands so the person playing it now probably never put the wear on the guitar to begin with. Does that make that person a poser.

It's ridiculous. And by the way that nonsense I've read in the other thread about relics are like a fake Rolex. PLEASE, with that line of reasoning Fender Gibson stc., shouldn't recreate any of their historic guitars and we should all buy their new genuine modern version of the LP Strat Tele etc. HORSECRAP.

If you like your guitar relic'd by a relic or roll your own. It's all good. And if you don't. DON'T.

So now for all those relic lovers show yours off with some pics.

LOL! I agree. I'll never understand why folks just like to shit on someone else's likes.

I have only seen 2 factory relics. One was that one cheaper Tele that has the most horrible relic on it you could imagine (some kind of signature model IIRC), and the other was Greg Koch's 52 RI Tele, and that one looked good. He had to show me the Custom Shop sticker to make me believe it wasn't the real deal.

Anyway, like I said in the other thread, which agrees with the OP, if you have a vintage guitar with real honest wear, unless you bought it brand new back then, it is likely none of YOUR wear at all. I have an 84 62 RI Strat that has some good honest wear on it. It is NOT MY wear, it came from whoever played it before me. But it is one of the most comfortable Strats I own because of the wear, especially the neck wear.

Sometimes, I just cannot get my damn hands to stay dry. All of my newer guitars will feel sticky when that happens. But this old Strat always feels great.

Still, I have NOT done anything to speed up the wear on my newer guitars. They'll get there eventually.

Wouldn't you rather a more biodegradable finish that would easily break in an actually become worn from use??? This way it's broken in specifically for your style of playing?? Or is that blasphemous?

I feel the need to point out that the Joe Strummer is NOT a relic. People keep using that guitar in the Relic argument but it's not part of the Relic line and wasn't made by the people who make the relics. It's a "replica," which means they just matched the visual style of Strummer's. The wear on the body isn't even real - I think it's silkscreened or something. It feels totally flat.

Anyways, I love my beat up guitars, both relic and real!

I agree we are to have fun but I figured one could bump one of those puppies. But you and I are in the same camp:

I love relics and have a few. Too many for my talent level, in fact.

The negative comments & multiple threads don't bug me at all, though. What DOES bug me a little is the old "drug behind a truck" comment. It's just overused. How about "that guitar looks like someone covered it with peanut butter and fed it to my dog?" Or something similar - a bit of creativity might break the monotony.

Screw all the naysayers on this forum who continuallly whine about relics and persist in posting threads that say things like, "What is it about relicing," and "I don't get relicing," and "Relicing is stupid." Enough! You're B-O-R-I-N-G!!!

Play what you like. It's a free country. F*** what anybody else thinks.

Jerseydrew - Nice; I've admired your guitar from afar. I just ordered a Rocketfire from Nick in Sonic Blue (about a month or so ago, actually). Really looking forward to it!

As I become older and more worn, I think I appreciate the relics concept a bit more.
