Advice for a direct rig...

I want to get a small preamp rig that is capable of plugging straight into a PA in case my amp craps out during a show. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, just something that will function properly in case of emergency. Any suggestions or advice about direct rigs would be greatly appreciated.

Digitech RP500 might be worth looking into, you really need a modeling device, as they can simulate speakers. A typical preamp alone will sound too flat.

Personally, I'd find a used POD bean. You'll get a preamp, line level signal, tuner, reverb and a few fx. Really useful as a back-up!

Tech 21 Character Series ... I stash one in my gear bag just in case. I've tried it in rehearsal just to make sure it's up to the task and it would be fine for an emergency. Just throw it at the end of your pedal board and you can still use all your normal effects.

If it's a really important show, I bring a Fender Pro Junior as a second amp.

I hear a lot of guys keep a Crate power block for emergencies, but I've never tried one.

I've done a few gigs with an RP500 lately and like it real well.
