How to Laquer a tweed amp?

I've just bought an almost new Blues Deluxe Reissue. I really like the look of the older laquered tweed amps. Is this easy to do, or is it a shedload of work? Is the outcome pretty predictable, or is it likely to end up looking awful?

Lacquer is generally sprayed, it's explosive and toxic--you need spraying equipment and a ventilated spray booth to do it right. I imagine there are ways to get the same look without using lacquer--I couldn't tell you, butI'm sure someone around here can.

Not lacquer......shellac.

Buy some Zinsser Bullseye amber shellac, cut it 50/50 with denatured alcohol & brush it on.

Every subsequent coat will make it darker.....you can easily regulate your final color from "golden aged" to "rotten banana". It's remarkablly easy to do, too. Pro results are a snap.

1. Go to home depot.

2. Buy a quart of Zinser Bullseye Amber Shellac and two-three foam brushes

3. Take your chassis out of the cab (this may be near impossible with new Fender amps)

4. Paint it with the shellac.

5. After it's dry, do it again.

6. Enjoy

I got a can of MinWax Poly Shades, Honey Pine, but I haven't had time to do my 5E3 kit build. Maybe this weekend.

Yes, people use that stuff.....I did it once. Never again. The shellac route is so much easier.

I used a combination of Zinsser spray shellac and Zinsser amber shellac.

1) Spray cabinet with clear shellac.
2) Very lightly sand to get the tweed fibers.
3) Coat with 1 to 3 coats of amber shellac, to taste.
4) Finish with a very light sanding and a final coat of clear shellac.

Bare tweed

After two coats:

Three coats
