'66 Fender Pro Reverb; new RCA 6L6s...

this amp sounds killer!

Woody, yet chewy...glassy, yet spongey.....

Ok. I'll stop.

I've had this minty '66 PR for about 10 years. It's always been a little harsh and basically to clean to go out and gig. I recapped it entirely w/Spragues and installed Eminence Red, White and Blues.

Going through some boxes, I found a matched set of NOS RCA 6L6s. My tech cleaned the pots up and biased the RCAs.

Put the amp back together and what a difference! I played my SG Jr (P-90) through it and cranked it to 6/7 on volume. I couldn't believe the clarity and sweetness. Just wailed in a big open room for about an hour.

I was told the RCAs have a "soft" vaccuum compared to the Russian 5881s that were in the amp previously. Which explains the spongy feel supposedly.

All I can say is, I should've done this long ago! Can't wait to plug my tele into it.
