Overdrive suggestions
Hey guys. I've been going through a bit of overdrive GAS lately, trying to find a decent mix of overdrives that will last me awhile. I play in churches mostly, but our sound is very contemporary and a bit out there, so crazy sounds are okay. I really want to get a setup I can stick with for a bit, but I'm having trouble figuring out my drives. So far, the onyl two I've found that i really like are the Barber LTD SR and a Voodoo Labs Sparkle Drive. I'm also on the wait list for a Tim. I play through a Tele Deluxe reissue into a 4x10 Deville. Any experience / suggestions as to some drives that will mesh well with those?
I primarily use the Sparkle Drive with a bit more clean signal going through for a lighter, defined drive, and the Barber for just a grade above it. The rest of my setup consists of a MXR Comp, Boss TR2, MXR Phase 90, DD7, DL4, and RV5 off the top of my head. Thanks guys! |

The KOT is a great flexible light/medium OD, and the Skreddy Screwdriver is a very unique and flexible pedal.

What are some of the qualities of the previously mentioned drives and how do you think they'd stack with the drives I already have? Also, I've been very interested in fuzzes. It's something I've never really used before and have been wanting to try them out. Jack mentioned the MXR Classic Fuzz. Any opinions on it? What are some other reasonably price, quality fuzzes?

Check out the new Lovepedal Dragon. There were a few in the emporium for less than 120. I used one in church a few weeks ago. Kinda different, some really cool tones.

Personally, I think Lovepedals are over rated. I've given several a try and dumped them all. It'll be a cold day, before I give any more of them a try.

I've got a Deville 410, and with a BB Preamp, it sounds killer. It can be nice and some-what subtle, or very aggressive in a Bassman/Plexi kind of way.
But then again, I guess it really depends on what kind of OD you're looking for - "high" gain, mild gain, or low gain? |

I use a Barber Super Sport with an LTD SR and it's a great combo. The Super Sport has a LOT more gain on tap but can even be dialed in as a good clean boost. It's more brit sounding and can sound almost fuzz-like when it's cranked (at least close enough for me). I was using a Timmy to hit both of them with a clean boost and they all get along nicely, but I prefer the sweeter gain tones of the LTD SR to the Timmy (!) and actually got down to only two drive pedals on my board - I'm re-discovering my volume pot.
If you want something with even more tonal options than the Super Sport, go for a Small Fry. I have one for sale on the forums (ie full disclosure!) but that is only because I have too many gain pedals these days. The Small Fry can be dialed in to sound brit, Zen-like, Low gain like the LTD, etc. With the internal trim pots you can get it set to your amp and guitar. It's a VERY versatile pedal with a tone of tones on tap. |

the lovekraft mojodrive is a great all around pedal it can clean boost, give the 808 ts screamer and the marshall/dumble thing as well
tons of drive and the other model starts with the letter C (cant remember the name) is a higher gain model |

Wait for the TIM.
Using it as your last drive pedal, it will lay down a base of overdrive goodness that your other two pedals will feed into perfectly.

Make sure to try out the Fulltone Catalyst. It can do it all, boost all the way to fuzz. Great little box, Fulltone came up with. Also check out a HBE PowerScreamer. Like the Fulldrive, it is a TS with an optional boost. |

Consider the Kingsley Jester.
Light to heavier OD and a Boost Channel too each with 3 modes each. Can do lean to mean with 2 tubes at actual high voltage (250V) running them. Like no other OD, real not simulated. |
