Any Kenny Wayne fans here? Asking because
Asking because I went to see him last Fri night in NJ, and found it good but...a little odd. Full "review" is at my blog (www.woodytone.com), but what I mean by odd is while the playing was good and the band members were good, there was zero energy on-stage. No one interacted, just lacked the whole live energy feel if you know what I mean. Am I just too used to rock shows? Then again, SRV shows had a bunch of energy, ditto for Doyle Bramhall II.? Anyone else had this experience with a KWS show or was this an anomaly?

I'm a long time fan of Kenny. His feel is phenomenal, and his playing is super clean and precise. What sets him apart from others in the same vein is his sense of rhythm in his soloing. Even on his first album, the dead on timing of his soloing was incredible.
I've seen him play twice, once opening for someone, and the other in a smaller club. I don't remember him being as animated as Buddy Guy or Stevie, but I also don't think he just stood there. I did prefer his bluesy stuff more than his more recent rock album, but I'll always be a fan.

I like his playing alot
Have seen him numerous times throughout the years. Only issue I have is ... I'ts been the SAME SET every show Even he must be bored of it I wish he'd come up with some new stuff, closer resembling his olderstuff. Without worrying if it sounds too SRV. If that's your thing, go with it . Great player |

Glad to see there are a few other KWS fans.
I saw him play last Sept at an outdoor festival and he was great. No complaints about his stage presence, they talked a bit and KWS showed off a few times so it was pretty good... but they played all the old stuff. I was hoping they'd play some tunes from the Hendrix Tour but no such luck. The best part was seeing Chris Layton on drums. IMHO he's the more famous guy of the group. Noah has some great pipes too, and sometimes he plays rhythm for Kenny.

I must've seen a bad show then? Buddy said he likes KWS's studio stuff, but live he's had the same experience as me. Maybe it's a NJ/NYC thing?!

I saw him last summer (worked at the club actually) and i thought he and the band sounded great (Chris Layton on drums, which i didnt realize until KWS intro'd the band at the end of the set, from where i was i could only see part of the stage) and he played very well. I had heard him before and expected good things, and he delivered. But my overall feeling after the show, is that i felt like i had heard it all before, if you know what i mean, no disrespect to Kenny

This guy is hardly original. Great player, but if I want Stevie Ray licks/tone/mannerisms, I'll throw on Stevie. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF4f9NdCFUU -If that clip isn't justification of my statement, I don't know what is. |

I saw him opening for the original G3 show at Concord. He just stood there with his hair hanging over his face, bobbing his head. Looked like a cousin ID bobblehead doll.
Beat the snot out the guitar though. And neither EJ or Satch (in the main G3 lineup) did much in the way of stage antics. Although I was there to hear them play, not watch them jump around like Diamond Dave. But I don't care for the whole style that KWS was doing so the whole effect was a loss in my book. That was a long time ago. I'm dimly aware that he has branched out a bit but I've been too busy learning about Henderson, Landau and Herring (and that sort, which is more to my taste) in the interim to go to any more KWS shows. I guess he's using the same amp as me these days (biter ) so I ought to check it out. Any suggestions for stuff with his own voice?

I like him. I've never seen him live but I think his songs are really good. The guitar playing isn't stunning but it's solid.

Saw him at a club last week. 10 feet from the stage. When they stepped onstage, he and the singer looked higher than a kite. He then proceeded to use evry SRV lick and movement known to man.
I was on the guest list, so my wife and I enjoyed ourselves. Same old stuff, but he is a good, if not original, player. There was, however, a lot of interaction between him and the singer. The stage was very small, so I guess that had some effect on stage antics. |

I remember when he came out and it was pretty obvious that he was doing the SRV thing - beat up guitar, licks, etc.
I liked his earlier work but I think he's just one of those artists that hasn't progressed much over the years. I got the "rock and roll" album he put out a few years back and just couldn't make it through it all - and I usually really try to let it sink in before dismissing it. As for the energy, I've only seen a few live performances on stage and his earlier concerts seemed to be pretty good. That singer was stale IMO though. I'm not sure as to what the situation was but I think he could have found someone to really be a frontman - then again, maybe they just wanted to spotlight on Kenny himself. The guy rarely moved and always seemed out of his element... I'd love to see him hook up with some other well known musicians...maybe get on tour with Jonny Lang or something.

Never seen him live. Some friends and I cover Blue on Black occasionally. People love that solo.
