Matched Cabs and Heads

Do you believe the "this cab is specifically matched for this head" reason from the manufacturer? Brand X cab is designed to go with brand X's cab as well, or would you go with a cab of your own choice (and maybe cheaper)?

Thanks!
-Mark

I believe that almost all amp designers & tweakers are working with one speaker type and cab in mind when they make decisions on capacitors, output transformers, tube brands, et al.

I think it has to do with a big compromise between tone, production cost and demand. In other words, I would love to believe that things are "matched", but big production manufacturers go for bulk, which may not be the amp designers choice?
I suppose once your paying over 2K for a combo or half stack, you would be lead to believe that they are providing you with the best match....but who is listening?
Aesthetically speaking, I go for a set that looks "right" together thou.

I think they tweak the voicing once they have the cabs made and speaker decisions made, at least I would hope.

I bought an Orangutang and later bought the matching cab and it did sound better than my other cabs with that head. But then I changed the speakers anyway! It really sounds better now.

I have a 20th Anniversary Bogner Shiva on the way and it comes with the matching OS cab/V30s and I was told that it rules with that cab. I'm sure they voiced the amp with that cab.

Yes, and all of my amps sound best to me with their matching cabs.

It depends. Ususally it's not a matching cab, but some sort of manufacturer designed speakers that are the most important to have matched to your amp. In the case of some amps, like a JCM 800, this doesn't matter, and it's mostly about finding a speaker that works well to compliment the amp for the sound you want, not to be stuck to a specific matching cab. For other amps, such as the Peavey 3120 ( a fancy XXX) it DESPERATELY needs a matching cabinet in order to sound good.
