Need Bass recommendation for home recording

I'm a 6 string guitarist looking for a mid-priced 4 or 5 string bass (~$500) for home recording (MacBookPro, Apogee Duet, Logic).
I play Gibson and Fender guitars but am open to all suggestions.
I'm not sure what kind of music I'm playing but it's probably my own concoction of 70's rock. I'm a geezer and have been playing since '72.

thanks,
Chris

If it was me I'd be looking for a used Fender USA P-Bass or a new MIM P-Bass. But that would be me.

You might do well with the new Squire Classic Vibe series from Fender. Check out Ed Friedland's review here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6Cd98DH__U

I agree with mainsale, a used mia P or brand new mim P, both great options.
