I can only talk for myself:
After trying out a Pittbull 50/12 I'll be very carefull before buying another VHT/Fryette amp.
The amp was badly shielded and very receptive to noises from my home network.
The amp was extremely loud and sounded terrible at low volumes.
I found it very difficult to get a good sound out of it (that I liked).
It had a sound signature that was not for me (and which I seem to find in all the demos. You call it clear, I call it cold and sterile.
Maybe with different tubes, speakers and a Hot Plate...
And the tolex work was far below of what to expect from an amp that "expansive".
I swaped it with a Fender Super Champ with EV speaker and a boost mod and never looked back.

The amp was of course one of the older models long discontinued and if given the opportunity I will surely test out one of Fryette's newer creations. But there are a lot of amps I would check out first.

I've only seen one in a shop (and I'm in a big city), so it probably has a lot to do with retail availability.

any word on when the memphis will be out?

splatt the clips are a real pleasure to hear - it is great to "hear" these amps (as I am considering buying one), but also the first 2 clips I hadn't heard and truly enjoyed them on multiple levels. (musically, emotionally, technically, and more)

Splatt,
before answering your questions let me explain why I posted my message. It was in response to a post by anoobis which in a way suggested that all players not using a VHT are either sloppy players or like veiled amps...

My Pittbull was a NOS amp (if something like this exists). It was given to a dealer as a commission and ended in some dark corner of his warehouse until recovered. I was the first owner.
The Pittbull 50/12 is different from the other Pittbulls! It is long discontinued and is more some kind of Blues/Rock amp. It is not high gain, somewhat unusual for a Fryette amp. In my ears it was a harsh bastard which seemed to dislike my rather hot pickups. It worked better with guitars with weaker pickups. But honestly I had no intention of changing my guitar.

It is a bit difficult to compare a raw amp with processed and mastered CDs but I went to my vault and went through Prezens and a John Legend CD...no, it does not sound cold and sterile. But as I said your Pittbull was most likely different from mine.

The point is: Not every amp is for every player. In my case it would have been better to try out the Pittbull before buying it.
Just because I bought the wrong amp does not mean that all Fryette amps are bad. The demo of the Memphis sounds very promising. But there are tons of good builders out there who all have something unique going on. Everyone has to find his/her own sonic heaven. That cannot be done by others.

Sounds like you never let the speaker break-in. I thought the Deliverance was harsh, too, until the tubes and speakers were well broken in.

Yeah, you're maybe right.
But since the amp was much too loud for home use (or sounded terrible with the loop trick) and I did neither wanted to invest in a good attenuator nor could get fond of the overall sound of the amp it was not worth the effort (for me at last).

i had one of those for a coupla months; great little amp, for me.
used it on a few film-scores, no-one seemed to complain, and i was happy;
won a nice little award for one of those scores, as it happens.

so.....
..... while it may not have been "the amp for you" in any case,
it does sound suspiciously like something was very wrong with that amp.

and:
the master did like to be turned up a bit on that one, and fryette's 50w
is actually 50w.

oh, well!
but, you're thrilled with your SuperChamp, so it's all good, right?
tutto bené?

Yes,
I am very happy with my Super Champ.

I am pretty sure you would also have sounded great through any transistor amp and would have still won the award

Amp sounds like poop until it gets some volume? Assuming where you live has more than one room, a trick that's always worked for me and cost less than an attenuator has been a long cable.

Great idea, I thought about that as well.
But to get a very good sound I hat to turn it up very loud.
Even when I closed the windows of my house a friend who's living in a house across the street could easily listen to my playing...
Maybe I should mention that it was a 4x10 combo.
