The Trooper

Can anyone tell me what key its in? E?

My band is playing it and I the boss Super Shifter and I just can't seem to get the harmony on the main riff to sound correct....
I play the higher part and have the pedal set for down a third.

Thanks in advance...

If memory serves, it's in E, but you'll never get it to sound right with a harmonizer because the harmonies aren't straight 3rds....or straight anything for that matter. They are two independent lines that follow the chords.

Again...if memory serves....

E MINOR!

The "main" riff starts with guitar on and E note, so the second pass, the harmony guitar comes in on the G note.

I'd play the E, and set it for 3rd up in E minor.

However, you might need to check the rest of the song because there might be some places where you'd want to play the "harmony" part yourself, and have it harmonize a 3rd down so the pedal "plays" the "main" guitar part.

Yup, a harmonizer will not do it, because the pitches are not all 3rds. I know a neat trick that I learned from Steve Kimock, that may get you through. Try tuning your B string up to C. That way you'll have a raised third, but can hold it with one finger. Once you come to the note that is off in the scale, just flatten the one note. There is most likely only one note that is making it sound off, so play around with alternate tunings with those two strings until you find a happy medium that will allow you to play the trademark riff, and not fall apart when it comes to other sections that aren't harmonized. He got it to work on a really cool Yes tune, though I can't seem to recall which one right now. In the old days there were other players who would show up at his shows to see how he did it. So, he started turning around right when it came to that section, LOL!!!
