Best big muff pi

Looking at this pedal and wondering what some good options are. Didn't know which boutique guys were good or if the EH's were pretty cool. Thanks for any help.

The new EHX Big Muff with Tone Wicker seem pretty good. It has the sound you'd expect from a Big Muff and, with the Tone On/Off option aswell with the Tone Wicker (a High frequency boost), it covers lots of different tones and flavors without going too far from the basic concept of the pedal. Plus the price is pretty low and, like the rest of the XO line it uses the typical BOSS-kind of adapter.

I wouldn't pay a lot for a boutique take-off having that one as an option. But, if you wanna try something more flexible yet better built and handmade, I suggest the Musket Fuzz, lots of tonal options from Gilmore sounds to in-your-face palm-mute-flavoring wall of sound.

The Big Muff with Tone Wicker is a sweet pedal.

Thanks for the info. Really like the Wicker Muff and the Musket. Price is great on the Wicker.

Anyone know if the Musket is true bypass?

True Bypass aswell. All new EHX are indeed (as far as I know), not buffered or "hardwire bypass" or any other.

TB is not always the best, but, in my opinion, it's better to have a TB pedal instead of a crappy buffered one, so, being well built and real TB, those new EHX are a great bang for the buck IMO (with the one exception of the Small Clone Nano... it sucks on sound and constructions, feels like a toy).

I really don't think there is a "best". I own several examples and they all offer something unique.
right now they are as follows:

Big Muff PI NYC=classic big muff sound. very great at thick chords, not so much at single note runs. Personally find this pedal very useful and it can be had at really cheap prices.

Little Big Muff=A little more mids and vintage sounding. Not as thick but a little better a notes. cleans up good. All in all a good example. Cheap too.

Skreddy Mayo/ mids switch=More Hi-Fi sounding uses better parts and it shows. very articulate even highs and lows. The most open sounding of them all. cleans up amazingly sounds exactly like glycerine from bush with the sustain turned down and the vol. backed off. add some delay and its instant Gilmour. has the most gain of them all.

Skreddy Cognitive Dissonance II/ mids switch=In between the mayo and a classic big muff sound. Less gain and less hi-fi sounding. Has all the traits of the mayo just different. Not as harsh but more of a bloom. Solo's really sing with this pedal. Even more Gilmourish. Chords are really smooth and even. And has the most output.

Devi Ever Shoe Gazer=Well, what can you say. Very harsh and obtrusive I would describe only as "muff-like" but a very different animal really. One can obtain really crazy out-of-hand sounds with this thing. Very unpredictable and relentless. doesn't clean up what so ever but can get a pretty cool octave thing going with the second channel.

I have yet to try any russian versions but am looking to get a Green russian very soon and a creamy dreamer as soon as I can find one. Oh, and I've got a rocket on the way.

hope that helps.

The Best one, to me, is the Green Russian Big Muff. It was made in the early 90's. It's darker than the standard Big Muff is and has a bit more detail at low gain, and a bit more wooly-ness at higher gain. It's a bit hard to come by, and can be expensive, but it's by far my favorite of the Big Muffs, and the most readily available of the older Muff units.

And, and this is Devi's "Official" take on the Big-Muff, try it out if the Shoegazer is your thing, but too powerful: http://www.deviever.com/fx/hyperion/index.html
