Best OD for a Strat bridge single coil into a clean Matchless HC30 rig?

I'm looking for some thick, yet defined (and not muddy) overdrive
tones from my Suhr Strat bridge pup (VLP60).
I play through the EF86 channel totally clean, and want to step on something
(preferably ONE pedal) to get me into that sweet moderate gained strat tone...ala Carl Verheyen or David Gilmour or Eric Johnson.

I could use a boost along with an OD pedal (I have a Cusack Music More/Louder pedal), but I want to see if anyone out there does it all with one stompbox.
At rehearsal last nite, I tried a ToneBone Classic...and got pretty close.
It was still sounding a bit muddy though...maybe I need to tweak it more.
Let me know what works for you all.

One question: do you have a dedicated tone control for the bridge?

I find this one simple mod does more to get a "thick" tone out of the strat bridge than anything else. I usually keep the tone somewhere between 5-7.


You might want to try the Zendrive. It loves bridge pickups of any type. Not alot of gain but still surprisingly thick and if you crank the voice control it adds gain and treble definition.

No...one tone control, unfortunately.

So, I'd like not to mess with the controls too much when switching from clean to OD.

I don't have a Matchless but the TIM is the first OD pedal I have ever owned that made me switch from the bridge-middle pickup to the bridge with my MB MK IV. All other ODs I tried sounded too thin or too muddy so I always had to use the 4th position on my G&L S-500 before I had the TIM. The TIM thickens the tone but stays very articulate as it doesn't add mids or boomy bass. The bass control is pre-distortion. Both the bass and treble EQ controls are amazingly powerful but always stay clear and defined. The best part is that it does the exact same thing even with the neck pickup - just turn the bass and treble in the opposite directions. I also set the boost knobs for additional gain and extra bass so I can kick it up a notch when needed. The symmetrical compressed clipping setting also thickens up the tone a lot. Great pedal.

Me either... but I never use the bridge for clean. The bridge provides the thinnest, least useful clean tone on the strat IMO. I have mine set up so that the bridge has a dedicated tone but the tone pot is bypassed when I select bridge+middle. No muss, no fuss when switching. Its a very worthwhile mod

Had some fun playing my Jester thru a friend's SC30 yesterday - great sounds with my strat.

Between us we have way too many ODs, the Jester was a standout.
