Wondering about tone, feel, OD/distortion handling, etc... Just looking for some opinions from opinionated people! =P

Well let's try this a different way.. Anyone prefer the sound of a Clapton strat to a Mayer strat? Or vice versa? I don't mean their careers, I mean people who have played both.. Or thoughts on one or the other if you've played either.

Hello, owner of both the SSL's & Vintage noiseless here. Never tried the Klein though sorry.

I really like the bell-like quality of the SSL's, and they are just perfect on the notch positions. The Vintage noiseless are really nice too, I would have a hard time saying if I had to pick just one.

They both hold up well in overdrive too, although I think the winner there might be the noiseless. The Jeff Beck noiseless "hot" ones are a good consideration too if you use much overdrive.

I'm more into the mayer strat, more my style. He is using that 4th notch position very often during his solos with a hint of overdrive...that is the ultimate tone in my book.

Chris Klein winds a great pickup - I took a chance on a set of his high output S-1's and I love them. I have a set of Dirty Texan's to put in my next Strat type build. I've used SSL-1's and I like them in the bridge with Alnico II's in the neck and middle. I've never liked the sound of noiseless single coils - they just lack something to my ears.

Thanks for the input, especially about the Mayer strat. The S-5s are supposed to be a tone copy of those pups. So Soul, how does the Mayer strat do with some distortion on it? Not just gritty OD but a BSIAB2 kinda sound... Or if anyone else can chime in that'd be great too.

mayer strat can sing with some overdrive & distortion. Definitely stands up well to some gain being introduced, I really like it with a zendrive pedal.

I hear john is using a marshall bluesbreaker pedal for his gain these days too, might wanna check one of those out! But yeah, clean or overdrive that guitar rocks. The pickpups especially
