I installed the chassis in a larger pine cab from JD Newell with an Eminence Legend V12 speaker, and replaced the first preamp tube with a 12AY7. It's bigger, clearer and prettier than it ever was before, and the boxiness is gone.

I don't want to put the amp in a bigger chassis or replace the transformer, I would rather keep it simple right now. It is only a practice amp so I don't want to invest a bunch of money. Thanks though, I have been reading about some cap and resistor things I can do, and also something about separating the line wires from the others.

I replaced the output tranny with a Merc Mags unit and the speaker with a Weber AlNiCo. Made it way better sounding. New tubes don't hurt either.

Try the 12AY7 first; it's a lot prettier sounding.

If it hums lose the screw on the top of the rear cover-free.
Upgrade/change preamp tubes you really can hear the dif in this simple amp.
Different speaker-whats best? you decide.
Cool little amps.

A Ragin Cajun Speaker is a nice upgrade. Better spectrum of sound...reduced the boxiness.

I'll have to try a 12ay7 at some point. the PJ is one of the few amps that I never modded. just retubed and go, kept the stock speaker which is nicely broken in.

I have 2 of these amps, and just retubed. I'm getting a strange vibration that I've never gotten with any other tubes I've used. might be the springs on the power tube holders, but I even tried the same set in both amps, and it's doing it in both. not sure if it's a microphonic tube or what.

tung sol 12ax in v1, EH in V2 and TAD power tubes.

anyone else have this problem?

Here's a link to some available mods:

I'd love to try these, myself.

I just wanted to comment that I popped a new Ragin Cajun in my Pro Junior today and it is a huge improvement over the brown sticker stock Eminence. Fuller bottom, smoother highs, more punch, more output, just more of all the good stuff. Great upgrade for $64.

Talk to Bill M about the pro jr. - from what I gather he's given up on them as an upgrade platform.

Interesting, I hadn't heard that. I wonder why.
For what I want out of this amp, it's pretty perfect with the speaker upgrade. Although I did think about a head cab for it when I ran it through my Reinhardt oversized 1x12 cab. I couldn't see investing that much more in this amp though, as it is supposed to be a little grab n' go practice amp for me. Plus, mine came in a cool little cab of its own.
