bassman 10 project OT issue, HELP!
so i just picked up a broken bassman 10 for $175. it powers on an is loaded with the original vintage speakers in perfect working condition but the power tubes will not heat up. i'm not much of a tube amp repair expert but have had a similar problem with an old sovtek mig 100 in the past so my best guess was the OT is blown which can be a pain to replace. but as i was checking the amp out i noticed that it had been a little smashed around and the guy i bought it from said that it worked until the movers moved him into his new house. so it possibly could just be something was banged loose or there is a broken connection that needs re-soldering. i opened it up and nothing looks to be noticeable loose or out of place, so i guess no matter what the problem my be i am wondering two things...
1. anyone have any advice that may help me to self diagnose the problem and possibly fix it without having to dish out 100+ in labor to a shop and 2. if it is a blown OT any suggestions about what the best reasonably priced replacement OT would be, i would like to keep as true to the original tone of this amp as possible any help would be great and much appreciated thanks Last edited by friction.usa; 09-27-2009 at 12:41 PM. |

Output tubes will not heat up but the preamp tubes will? Is that right?

Tubes
Have you tried replacing the tubes? Getting "smashed around" can ruin a good tube pretty quick. That's the first and easiest thing to check. To get further into it, if you have a DMM, check to see if there's voltage at the heaters, plates, etc. Don't touch the filter caps.

The other point to be remembered is that some Bassman 10s had a pretty weird impedance thing going on so an output change to one of Teddy Weber's 018343 transformers could open up some new territory for you, impedance wise.

i tried a new set of tubes and it didn't seem to make a difference.

...sounds like the twisted-pair green "filament" wires (6.3VAC) going to the power tubes have an "open" somewhere...check them (or have a qualified tech check them).

I second a new output transformer. Never saw one like the ones in the Bassman-10 before nor after. We'rd stack, shape, impedance etc. Get a Mercury, Heyboer, Allen, replacement. Weber ehh, if you're on a budget.
