I owned the Bandmaster VM Head and didn't care for it much.

The clean channel is solid state and runs through the phase inverter tube and tube power amp, and the drive channel is tube but I also suspect there is some digital component there too.

I found the clean channel to be excellent, but didn't like the drive channel. The drive channel, to my ears, sounded a bit too digital, and was voiced very bright. To get a decent tone out of the drive channel you pretty much have to dime the bass and really roll back on the treble, especially with single coils.

I also didn't care for the digital reverb...it seemed that above a certain point, usually above "2" there was a digital "buzz" to it.

I think the amp is voiced well for humbuckers, but for single coils it just seemed too bright for me.

another Bandmaster VM owner here. the clean channel is good, the drive channel is okay. i coupled my VM head with an open backed cab loaded with some Eminence speakers. a Red Fang and a Private Jack. that combo really makes the Fender Bandmaster VM head sound good. the right speaker combo tames the highs and the lows and this head is really nice. it takes pedals well. the reverb is good, but not great. i am not much for effects, so i don't mind if they are just "okay"

in the grand mix of a band, who can tell what the reverb, delay, chorus are really like as far as warmth and depth?

anyway, for a gigging musician, these are nice amps

I own the Vintage Modified Deluxe for 6 months now and absolutely love the amp has great cleans and the OD sings and nice to have onboard FX so I don't have to carry pedals, but it does take pedals well and also has an FX loop too. Nice to have a Celestion in it. With 40 watts plenty of headroom. Trick is to keep the treble setting low on the OD. channel.
