Interseting shot of a AV52 Tele finish
Came across this pic at the Telecaster discussion forum:
I though it was worth sharing. its a 52 reissue. If you look close you can see the line between the poly and nitro:

What's with the counter-sunk screw hole? Is that how they did it in '52?

I don't think that's a AVRI 52. It may be a Japanese version or something.

That's what strikes me too, more than the poly. Poly is fine if it's thin enough. Heck, thick nitro will choke a guitar just as easily as thick poly.

Yeah, I don't think the finish thickness is something you should be able to measure with a ruler
. My buddy has a 52 reissue, and he has a chip on the neck through the finish, and I was suprised to see how thick the finish is...not as thick as that shown though.-SF

I thought the poly undercoat is supposed to be clear? That finish looks like it was laid on with a trowel.

I'd have to see a full shot of the guitar before I believe that's an AVRI. A close-up just leads to generalizations.

I've read many times the thickest finishes from Fender are those USA RI's. More than the poly's.

Man, my Kelly Tele has a varnish so thin, the neck's already getting worn down after a year of use. No way you could measure it with a ruler, so to speak. Something as thick as that OP pic just has to be doing something to the tone.

What's the point of undercoating nitro with poly? It kind of defeats the purpose.

All vintage finishes were not super thin either. There are many Gibsons and Fenders with finish 3 times as thick as your fingernails.
Tone? Tone is subjective. Why not just play unfinished guitars? Because. Thick is not a really big deal, it matters as much as anything else, and that's all. It's way harder to shoot a thin finish, and then 5 years later you see all the grain sucking, you'd all complain.

The point of coating it with poly is that it removes a couple steps, and turns them into 2 coats of 30 second painting, instead of intensive grain filling and hand labor.
