The Making of Get Killer Tone: Effects DVD

last gear update 3.19.10

We are still in production, just finishing up the History of Effects section where I'm matching pedals to the artists who made them famous. We're getting ready to start documenting the various pedals making sure to take the time to match the right guitars and amps to the pedals, as well as some matching pedals to certain guitar and amp setups. As much as there is a lot of high end stuff, there will be a nice range of non-boutique stuff for people who aren't made of gold...

I decided that I wanted to chronicle this process, both for myself and as a sign of appreciation for your collective contribution. There will be some cool tidbits about how and why I put certain things together that some of you might find quite useful (or humorous, depending). I've been enjoying reading your comments and input. I've also started adding Special of the Day, mostly on pedals, but with some of the peripheral gear as well...

Again, thanks for your collective contribution - your input has been really valuable to me!

Doug

I was hoping to read Skreddy in the line up but, I guess you can't squeeze them all in there.

Thanks Doug. Looking forward to what you bring us.

Today I started pre-production work on the Vai segment per the History of Effects...

Gear:
AnalogMan modded DS-1
Carvin Legacy heads & cabinets
Digitech Whammy
Ibanez JEM, S470 with Sustainiac, Jemini
Keeley modded TS-9DX
Morley Bad Horsie II, Little Aligator
MXR Phase 90
TC Electronic G System

There are a couple of diagrams out there for his signal chain, but as chance would have it, I teched for him when I was at MI 25 years ago. At the time and consistent with today he goes into one head which functions as the master, out through the effects loop to any effects that are not in front of the amp/s, returning in stereo to the effects return on the master head and slave heads. Back in the day, the master head was dry and the slave head was dirty, with the master being on stage right. I think the diagram that GearGeek is possibly backwards, but it's not the biggest deal. Usually when you get used to hearing stereo signals a certain way, like sleeping on one side of the bed, you don't want to change it around...

One of the neat by-products was discovering that the green channel of the Jemini is very much sounding like a TS-808. Into the clean channel on the Carvin with some 'verb coming from the G-System I was pleasantly surprised to hear how SRV the tone was, I mean really kind of in that zone. The vai site has some photos of his actual setting although they are of the original Legacy and not newer version which I'm using for the demo. And yes, to my ear the red channel on the Jemini is very DS-1...

Thanks 12, I can't comment on Skreddy at this moment, but I appreciate your observant eye!
Hey Jack - thanks! 510 is not in Oregon the last time I checked. 36v - wow.

Very cool. Lovepedal, Skreddy and Cornish are huge omissions, though.

Wah Wheel...

Special of the Day:

The Wah Wheel. The goal is to create the definitive wah collection so we can begin to lay to rest some of the truths and myths about the inductors and various other historical items about our beloved wah-wah pedals. In particular I'm working on completing the Vox>Cry Baby>Dunlop lineage. There are a number of pedals that have shown up since this photo was shot, and I'd like to give a big shout out to my friends at Dunlop who are going to be rounding out some of the modern pedals for me. I'd like to add that I went out as the support act for Michael Schenker this summer for six weeks here in the States, and after auditioning what I thought would be my first choice pedal, I ended up taking a modern Dunlop Cry Baby - because it sounded KILLER with my setup. That is to say on the DVD I'm going to be taking lots of time to match the Wah with the right amps. The modern Cry Baby works with high gain amps really well, hence why guys like Eddie, Zakk, Kirk, and Slash are using them. Funny story, when I bought the EVH wah from my buddy David in San Francisco, I plugged it into his Vox, and found to my surprise it's a great funk wah. And if you think about it, Ed got a nice cry baby, had a little work done on it, and then wore it in. If Ed's gonna have a wah, it's gonna a great one, and I was really impressed with this one as I've demo'd it so far. November is crunch month for matching pedals with guitars and amps and documenting them for the DVD. Fun stuff!!!

This DVD should instead be an encyclopedic DVD box set. Very cool.
