Catalinbread DLS vs. SCOD

I have the Catalinbread Dirty Little Secret now. Wondering how the Super Charged Overdrive compares to the DLS? From the description, I'm guessing more gain, less mids? What about compression?

I'll answer my own question. Further research shows that the contour knob is not a tone control. Therefore, dialing out high end might not be easy, since I prefer to do it from the pedal. Obviously changing the tone from my amp will affect all of my pedals.

I only had the DLS in house for an evening so I'm working from memory, but I have had a SCOD for a long time.

The SCOD has much more gain, much more compression, less Highs (not less mids), more mid-lows.

Unlike the DLS that will basically turn your amp into a Plexi, the SCOD perfers to be in front of my Plexi and I don't care for it with my Blackface at all.

Tonewise: DLS = Plexi, SCOD = cranked classic Orange/Laney (think Black Sabbath).

I just got a scod to go with my DLS.
REALLY different beasts.
SCOD has this half cocked wah thing going on, meaning there's a lot of (as said previously) low mids. This can be a bit of a boxy sound but cuts like a knife.
The DLS can do jangly chords, the scod dislikes full chords; its so fat and middy that it LOVES single note lines on strings 6 and 5, and chords sound punchy on strings 4-1.
  • The scod is almost the opposite of the DLS in terms of feel.
  • The DLS is dynamic, the scod is compressed.
  • The DLS is low to mid gain, the scod is mid to high.
  • The top end of the DLS is chimey, the top end of the scod is fizzy
  • The tone of the DLS controls treble, the contour of the scod changes the feel; seems to act quite like a presence control
  • Low gain scod -> low gain DLS is a very nice combo.
  • DLS can be quite refined, SCOD starts by ripping your face off
  • I used the dls to stack everything into, and by itself for crunchy-chimey chords; scod is great for articulate big lead lines and awesome phat low single note runs
I adore my DLS and it's solidly been my keeper pedal. I may consider changing the scod for an sft in the future, but I'll have to see if it works with my band.

Say, catalinbread...feel like giving me mega awesome discount on an sft?
