Seymour Duncan Antiquities

You'd think with all the time I spend hanging out on TGP that I'd be trying boutique winders left and right. I mean, a couple hundred bucks to hear the latest and greatest that nobody will shut up about isn't so hard to swing, right?

Wrong! I just bought what will be my 4th set of Duncan Antiquities. I keep coming back to them. It's my favorite humbucker of all time, they made a bitchin' rad set of Strat pickups, and the Tele pickups rival anything and everything else I've played first-hand.

I threw a pair of the humbuckers into my Heritage 535 before I sold it. And holy cow, that was the best sounding guitar I've ever owned and is even really among the best sounding guitars I've ever heard. Too bad non-Teles just aren't me. A friend has it now - a guy with a 60s L5-CES, a 60s Barney Kessel, and a killer handmade burst replica, among other things. And I think the Heritage is the best sounding guitar he owns. If only it were a Tele... I'd have kept it.

And of course... I have this parts Tele that pretty much immediately became my #1 guitar when it was finished. It all began because of a set of Antiquities. And after selling off tons of stuff I decided I could go for another high-end Tele so I went looking at a bunch of CS Teles. Brought mine along for a point of reference, and after doing the side-by-side I couldn't find a better sounding Tele, so for once I went home happy. And not poor!

Latest and greatest what? Copy of a 60 year old design? It's been done right for a long time.

I am completely with you. Why look any further?

I have been a Duncan user since 1982. Anything that doesn't have original pickups gets a Duncan. Anything that has a Dimarzio gets a Duncan. Anything that I borrow from you might come back with Duncans. Oh yeah, it's happened!

Looking further is a waste of time. It's done.

Duly noted. Let me loan you a couple guitars.

Oh wait crap, they all have Duncans already except for the John Mayer Strat, and I can't say that guitar really needs new pickups.

I have played with John before, let me borrow that one and it will come back with a Sex Pistols sticker.

You seem to be the kind of consumer who is easily fooled into pledging allegiance to a certain brand for life

Some people just know what they like. Clearly I'm not too far off of that myself or I wouldn't have just bought my 4th set.

...and you seem to be the kind of person whose own self importance lets you justify calling others fools.

Antiquities are a great pickup - both the 'buckers and the single coils.

Nope. I'm the type of consumer that does not give a "Best there is, best there was, and best there ever will be" status to any brand, because it's just silly. That's all.

I don't know where "self importance" came from but I'd rather be a fool myself actually. If I had the mentality that Seymour Duncan will always be the best no matter what, I will never have pickup gas ever again, saving myself a lot of money and dissatisfaction.

Maybe they aren't the latest and greatest or bestest and schmestest but they're sure done a world of good for a couple of Gibson Les Pauls I've owned.

Seymour made pickups for 20 years before I ever heard of him. If it's right, it's right.

Anyone else?

Me too!

It's unanimous, even with my other personalities, including the guy who talks like Harpo marx with a sign. (and thinks he's a 9 year old girl.. god get me passed the hello kitty display)
