Input/output direction on pedals?

Maybe there's an obvious answer, I haven't really thought about it:

Is there a specific reason why most (all?) pedals have input on the right side/ output on the left, as opposed to the other way around?

to me it makes sense for right handed guitar players. it keeps the cable going from your instrument to the first pedal out of your way.
