SRV Tone on Sky Is Crying

While I do love most SRV stuff, I can't handle his tone on "the Sky Is Crying" - it is way too trebly and whiny for me.

I know he was sort of mimicing Albert King on that (and most everything he ever did), but Albert's tone was always much better.

Just one mans opinion.

Sure, one man's trash...... Actually I guess you do have a point although I actually liked his tone on that one. I always thought AK sounded a little flat when I discovered him AFTER SRV! My thinking was that the tone on TSIC was AK-ish but "pushed".

I think alot of it is the tubescreamer; lots of compression and midhump.

SRV never sounded too trebly or whiny to me. Albert King (one of my faves) had many different tones throughout his career and sometimes he sounded too thin and plinky for my taste. Sometimes he sounded huge - it varied a lot.

That tone is like nails on a chalkboard for me. It's everything I strive NOT to sound like.

If you are talking about the tone at 1:49 when he steps on the screamer it's nuthin but classic SRV.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EI9TS4O5Ww4

You wouldn't like a '59 Bassman then. It has a singing treble shadow of your note that wears out the 4k range in your ears 'til you think everyone has become Charlie Brown's parents. Like you just got back from an unpressurized flight.

Besides the studio treatment on that track, 90% of the crying is directly in him squeezing the crap out of it. Hats off! Great touch!

I am not an SRV fan, I am an admirer.
