You should try to find a copy of Jason Lollar's book...pretty sure that'll cover what you need to know!

Jason is supposed to be working a new release, or so I've heard.

I'm sure it'll be great. He can build just about anything you want - he's not limited to the pups on his site. In regards to pups, I've thought about building a few myself but would rather just leave it up to Jason!

Try Stewmac's. You can get a Schatten winding machine
http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Tools/To...up_Winder.html pickup coil wire http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electron...Coil_Wire.html and a humbucker parts kit with bobbins, slugs, polepiece screws and a Alnico 5 bar magnet http://www.stewmac.com/shop/Electron...ucker_Kit.html The kit contains instructions for winding the pickups and then putting together either a 2- or 4-conductor humbucker. I've played around with winding my own pickups using the stuff from Stewmac and it is easy to build you own. The hard part is getting your wind pattern consistent so you can duplicate a given pickup wind you like repeatedly. Stewmac also sells single coil kits, which I haven't tried yet. FVB

The vid is good, but he doesn't go into any detail regarding how he's winding the wire. The number of turns, the tightness, how heavily you load an area, etc., all factor into how the pickup will sound. THAT'S where the years and years of practice come in.
I really want to do this too, just for kicks, but I know it'll take me hundreds of misfires before I can get into "pro" territory as far as sound goes. |

Pickups are very easy to make but extremely hard to make well. If you genuinely want to learn pickup making the go for it but if you just have an idea for a set up pups you want then find someone else to build them for you. It will be WAY cheaper!

i heard that for winding them, seymor duncan uses (or used to) an old turntable. My friend has an old one. I might take a shot at that. And yes, I have to do this for a science experiment. I thought that I may make something I like so that's an excuse for free pickups. Besides, I would like to know how to make pickups and make them well.
