Duane - 38 years ago today...

"This year I will be more thoughtful of my fellow man, exert more effort in each of my endeavors professionally as well as personally. Take love where ever I find it, and offer it to everyone who will take it. In this coming year I will seek knowledge from those wiser than me and try to teach those who wish to learn from me. I love being alive and I will be the best man I possibly can." - Duane Allman 11/20/46–10/29/71

As inscribed on his headstone.

Words to live by...

I still miss Skyman! He was just "getting going".

I can only imagine what the ABB would have become had Duane not been killed at such a young age. Granted, they did some great things after Duane died, but imagine if he had LIVED...

sure did ... I still remember (and have tape of) the first time I ever heard him, the last night of the Fillmore East, all of it broadcast live on radio in NY (WNEW-FM) ... my jaw literally dropped and I was floored. A once in a lifetime kind of musician.

I loved SkyDog in the ABB but can't stand his tone on Derek and The Dominoes, that whiny slide. Although I love that album - the last good thing Clapton ever did in my book.

The first song I heard this morning was Layla, and it hit me pretty hard. Had to explain to the girlfriend why my eyes were so watery.

Never knew the man. He passed before I was born. But his music will be in bones until the day I die. Liz Reed ... nice call. Live at the Fillmore will always be one of my desert island records.

I'll never forget my Old Man handing me a worn copy of Layla & OALS and saying ... you think Clapton is awesome ... he plays second fiddle to the other guy in this band. And I commenced to sitting on a riverbank with my headphones on letting Duane absolutely change my world. Dad would have been 59 on the 19th. I may not have him anymore, but I'll have the music he gave me. And Duane was part of that.
