Where does a compressor go into a pedal chain?
Hey, y'all. I'm about to put my pedals onto my board, and I was wondering where my BBE opto-stomp should go? (I know, Keeley guys - in the trash, right? Lol). Here's what I have -
Boss tu2 tuner - volume pedal - wah - mi audio crunch box - overdrive (not shure which one yet) - delay - hardwire reverb - amp. Is this up to current wisdom? And where should the compressor go? Thanks! |

I've always kept it before anything else (except my tuner). My 2 cents..

I put it after my overdrive for no other reason than I prefer the sound that way. I think most place it before the overdrive.

if it were me, between the wah and the crunch box...
compression sounds better before dirt imho

order is all preference really, but i believe typically you run the delay after reverb....or at least i do.
some what contradicting myself... does anyone know if i would place a comp before or after a whammy in my chain?

I have tried the compressor early in the chain before the dirt boxes and after the dirt boxes. Both are cool. For a typical compressor function I like it before the dirt boxes, but it sounds cool after the dirt boxes as well for compressed leads....

If you put the comp after dirt, the compressor will amplify the noise of the dirt pedals. I always run it before.

I keep mine in a box on the shelf ... had it since '82 but never could warm up to it.

When I played with the compressor I recently picked up, I had it before my overdrives, but after my TU-2. And then I realize I rarely used it and took it off. It also freed up a plug, as it was one of the older MXR Limiters that doesn't run off of batteries...just it's own big three prong. Now, I just need to post it up for sale.

This is how I would run mine, I dont always follow the norm but Ross style compressors sound the best in front of anything that isnt a fuzz.
For example, Fuzz>Comp>OD>...

Depends what kind of sound you want. They usually sit before or after dirt boxes. If you put it after dirt, the comp will in some sense "tame" the amount of hair that's on your drives and smooth it out a little, whereas having it before will effect your clean tone and your drives will stack on top of that. It's a matter of preference, really. I prefer before drives so if I want more hair, I can still do that.
I also like it after wahs. But that's also preference.

Not much to add here. Like others, best is before or after dirt boxes. I prefer before my OD so I can boost my OD pedal with it. I get more gain and more compression when used like this and it makes for a gain level in between my OD and my Distortion pedal (that's right after my OD). My main purpose though for my compressor is to punch up clean tones.
BTW, I play my pedal board into the front of a clean amp.
