Question what sounds the closest to a 1958 tweed deluxe..

without the price tag ($8000) heard some clips on youtube love the tone, espically with an es335 when they are cranked... anything that comes close with like an 1/8th of that price tag?

Any decent clone.

There are a million threads on 5E3s. Are you new to the forums?

There most be three dozen commercially available reproductions. All are great, it's a damn simple circuit to make and very hard to screw up.

Richter offers one for less than $900
Clark offers his "budget" model for $900
Li'l Dawg
Victoria
S2
Tungsten
Fender '57 RI
Airtight
Ceriatone
Kits from Mojo, Weber, Mission...
Etc., etc.

Plus the average price for the last 97 narrow-panel 5E3 Deluxes sold on eBay is right above $2000, topping out at $3000. Not $8000.

This may the single most reproduced amp circuit available at this moment. in case you didn't know, all those 5E3 threads that dominate this site are about that design specifically.

I went from a narrow panel tweed Deluxe to a brown Deluxe; that little brown amp smoked! Also, check out a blond Tremolux.

A tweed Bassman doesn't sound much like a tweed Deluxe.

Gibson GA-20

Check out the highly underrated Gibson GA-20 from the 1950s: 2 6V6s, 12ay7s, 5Y3GT tube rectifier, 12 in. Jensen alnico speaker--very similar circuit to the hallowed 5C3 Fender Tweed Deluxe circuit. I nabbed a '54 last year for a couple hunnit and it sounds pretty damn good, especially w/humbuckers. Granted I've never played a '58 Deluxe in person but I'd like to think I'm familiar with their tone. Check out these soundclips from fellow TGP member Ulysses:

(The GA-20 makes it's appearance third in line, I think...)

Quick search yielded these:

You can still find original Deluxe's for much less than $8000. The only people who are asking that price have been asking it for years. Any tweed Deluxe from about 1956-1960 will all sound very similar (identical circuit. Some 1956's are in a smaller box). They can still be found in the $1000-$1500 range if you look hard enough.

The Gibson line of vintage amps, like the GA-20, 30 and 40; while great amps, all seem to fall a bit short to me. They saturate much earlier than their Fender counterparts due to the smaller transformers that were used. If your recording, they can be just the right amp but live they get lost without a mic. I've had a few and even with a speaker change; that's another weak link in the "Crestline" series, cap job, new tubes and bias they never really have what it takes to do a small gig or rehersal. JMHO
