new semi-hollowbody guitar...
i'm debating between buying an epiphone casino or a hagstrom viking.
i know there are quite a few differences between these two guitars, but i was wondering if anyone here had any insight for me about either of them that would help sway my decision. thoughts?

yeah. i realize that i named the thread incorrectly.
i am aware that the casino is in fact a true hollowbody guitar, but i'm still torn between the hagstrom and the casino. any insights?

I had a Casino and it was useless for the type of music I play which is in the vein of early ZZ Top and Allman Bros. I play through a Marshall Bluesbreaker and I you tried to play at any kind of decent volume with the guitar pushing the amp, the guitar would howl and feedback like crazy...I think they're good for quieter, lower driven type stuff, but for what I like to play the guitar was useless. |

What styles of music do you want to play on this guitar?

Yah...it's all about what genre you're playing...
I have a Casino I love, but loud with distortion? Moo city. The Hags seem cool, but... Check out Epiphone Rivieras also...they come in mini humbucker, full humbucker, P90's (the P93), and with humbucker-sized P90s, P94s (The Valensi Rivieras). All are semi-hollows. I have two! |

i guess the best way to describe the type of music i play is classic rock with an alt. country/southern rock edge to it. i guess somewhat similar to wilco in terms of musical stylings? i definitely use a fair bit of overdrive, so i guess the casino is kind of out of the question. can someone tell me more about the build quality and other pros and cons about either the riviera or the hagstroms? (chances are i'll swap out the pickups anyway)

Jay Bennett used a fully hollow ES-330 with Wilco without feedback issues....

Oooo, amazing, I agree with this fella about something! The Riviera (original version only: mini-hums; none of that other crap is Riviera!) is such a cool gtr! I had a ko-ree-un made that was an astounding gtr for it's price class. It had a mahogany center block, as opposed to the usual maple, making for a pleasing, warm, fat response. To me most semi-hollows with a maple center block sound like solid body gtrs. When I find a sixties Riv with a neck I can dig, I will unload a lotta crap and buy it!!

I also have a 2000's MIK Riv that's pretty nice. I did a a lot to it though...reshaped the neck, rewired so it has a Torres volume kit and the pups are reverse phase in the middle (for Brian May tones), and the guy I bought it from had already put a stop-bar setup on it and Gibson white tulip tuners (he wanted a 335, really) ...but it's a very good instrument now! I may still strip the sunburst off the back and put a dark stain/sealer on...maybe... I'll have to check the block wood, but the neck is pretty nice grade mahogany once you take the poly off. |

i just tried out a viking and a viking deluxe tremar and was quite pleasantly surprised with both of them. they have super-thin neck that seem really stiff. they had a good weight to them and had really classy finishes. they sounded great too. i'm going to try out a few rivieras and sheratons and see how they compare.
