Whats this Gibson LP Classic worth?
I just returned my Gibson Studio Worned because i've decided to get a mapled capped one with different pickups.
I spotted and played a real nice mid-90's Classic. Has a '57 classic neck pickup. Only problem is the original owner idiotically scratched off the "classical" label and changed serial number to make it fit a '59 clone. I know this will lower the resale value and the price is probably lowered from that. Otherwise in great condition. Has a real nice non-sunburst goldish tinted maple top, light brown colored mahagony back. Plays great yadda yadda. What would a normal good cond. classic go for, and how much less would this one be? |

Good to mint condition - $1,200 & up.
As you describe it - $1,000.

it might be a little sunburst like....HOneyburst seems to be closest to it, it just doesnt go from Dark to light honey color, its a little more subtle.
Its priced at $1500, but theyre really selling it for $1200. I might offer less. But man does it sound amazing, I a/b it to my LP and it really does the neck pickup better, brighter treble but not as muddy distorted. |

heres a pic that looks similar of a new one selling for $2000
http://www.12fret.com/new/Gibson_Les...assic_Jn9c.jpg It doesnt have the "Classic" truss cover nor does it say "classic" under Les Paul. and different pickups, changed to '57 classics which I like better. |

Walk in with a grand in cash & be willing to show them your back. Seeing that the serial# & headstock have been defaced, I don't think that's at all unreasonable.

That's about the same price they're going for today, somewhere in the $1300-1500 range. The original owner made a very boneheaded mistake in defacing that guitar. I wouldn't pay more than $1k tops for it. If you ever want to sell it, you're going to have to try and explain the altered faceplate and serial number. If he won't budge below $1200, I'd keep looking. It wouldn't be too hard to find a LPC without issues. |

FWIW, 3 years ago I paid $1200 for a mint condition one with the HSC (pink cover and all - I LOVE that case!)

its at a friendly guitar store, they probably had it a year i think. Very honest guys, they told me upfront the changes done to it. I'll talk with them today again. I was just curious as to the value of the classics, Les Pauls have a somewhat confusing marketing display of their guitars. Guitar Center has a brand new clearance Classic for $1500 as a reference but im not as crazy about the guitar, pickups are HOT.

UPDATE:
Played it again today. Man it really does sound good, and I love that 57 pickup vs whatever the stock is. Its basically just modded to be more historic '59 ish. Changed pickups removed "model" or "classic" from head and changed serial number. 2 of those things are just ridiculously stupid. But I think its still worth the $1200. It has the greenish inlays which means later '90's? If i were to keep the guitar forever i could care less, but resale it tends to be a problem. I havent found any standard I like better. Perhaps the Std Traditional with coil taps but thats a looot more money. |
