Lol, I doubt they'll be collecting guitars already sold.

But I do wonder about their stock on hand. If it is found the wood is illegal (through Gibsons hand or their suppliers), will Gibson be allowed to pay a fee per guitar or will the guitars have to be destroyed?

Using non endangered wood for a Gibson is enough of a crime.

I'm quite surprised by the irreverence to the environment in this thread. It's nuts that some people still just don't get it or worse, don't give a shit. Let's hope the icecaps drown us and make us extinct sooner rather than later.

Pretty much anyone posting on this thread today will not suffer much from environmental changes, but their kids will very likely have to deal with a load of problems and a lower standard of living.

It's unfortunately very difficult to quantify anything in this area, and even more difficult to put money values on things, which is a problem because that is all we can understand.

Gibson, if they have done something wrong, will probably have a middleman to take most of the rap here. As pointed out by another poster, it is only necessary that the practice stops, not that Gibson be terminally damaged, although it seems that it might be good for the company if certain bosses were to leave.

I'm honestly having a hard time believing Gibson was out buying black market, illegal wood. Honestly guys, the quantities that they would have to buy in make this unlikely in my view.

Now, issues at the supplier end or orgins itself might totally be true. IF Gibson knew this and purchased anyways....

just trying to play devils advocate here.

<-- owns zero gibsons*

I agree - there have some fairly douchey comments made here - I really don't get it at all - this planet is all we've got and we need to take care of her!

If you own a guitar made of wood you are really not helping the enviroment much either.

I really don't get the Gibson bashing. Seems just a case of "I want one but I can't afford one so I'm going to say they suck!"

Henry is an asshole. Their attitude is arrogant. They screw their dealers (or former dealers) HARD.

But they make some pretty damn nice guitars. I've had enough and seen far more to know their qc is right up there and has been for a while. Having a jerk for a CEO doesn't make the guitars bad.

As far as this bit of business, you really cannot control what your suppliers do or check their sources. If my supplier of tubes was found to be using something illegal to make them, I guarantee I wouldnt know about it and couldnt do jack about it, and I'd be as surprised as anyone if some jackboot came and kicked down my door.

I seriously doubt Gibson would be sourcing the stuff from someplace they knew was getting it on the sly and could potentially put them in a bad position. They are just too big to play that game, and don't need to. There is good reason for them to risk the exposure. The money they might save just wouldn't be worth the risk.

Gibson:
“(The) Gibson Guitar chairman and CEO sits on the board of the Rainforest Alliance and takes the issue of certification very seriously,” the company said. “The company will continue to cooperate fully and assist our federal government with all inquiries and information.”

Would be pretty surprising if it were true, but I'll say innocent until proven guilty.
