Had a Fitness Test Today....

Ok, so I had my Personal Trainer take some baselines.

I'm 46 years old, weigh 163 and am 5'10" tall.

Body Fat % = 14

BMI = 23

Best test was : Completed 76 "good" pushups in 60 seconds (by my count 3 were discounted)

Did 15 pullups

Lunge test; plank tests; pretty much xceeded ecery test in every way. PLank test was only required to be 2 minutes, did that easy; one side plank test was 90 seconds, that was pretty easy

But I fell short on the vertical leap... a measure of power.
ONLY jumped 21.5", 24' considered "good".

Other tests involved, treadmill, etc - all well above average...

I'm pleased with these results but am bothered by the jump test.

Anyone else do this stuff?

Paul

76 pushups in 60 seconds? That is damn good.
Why do you care about the vertical jump?
How fast can you run 3 miles?

You rule. I'm 45 and work out an hour a day, at least 6 days a week. I'm in very good shape, but not THAT good!

I'm 30 and you're in much better shape than I am. I can do 1 (one) pull-up, 2 on a good day.

Hey - thanks - haven't flat out run in a while. I do interval strength training that combines cardio with weights, kettlebells, and body weight. Had not put any of this stuf to the "test". The regime I do lasts 1 hour and is VERY intense, compared to running it would more like the 1/4 mile race - typically a few minutes - done for an hour (I ran track in High School so I have a reference) . I was a little surprised by the pushups tho.

I say bothered by the jump, but not really.. my trainer was saying "if there are some goals to be had, here it is" ... the leap is a representation of POWER, and power (in his realm) is what makes first rate athletes, not so much fitness. Fitness is a major component, but when athletes age it's the power level and that drops. We can compensate with fitness, and that's how most people train, but trainnig for power is different and even more difficult the older we get. He differentiated by saying "power = the burst of speed and strength from point A. It represents that first move, the explosiveness. Notice you don't see many aging sprinters out there in the world, you do see many aging marathoners - people at a later age who are of course tremendously fit but are not at that "other" level. Power is the type of ability we lose as we age but need the most - the thing that wil get you out of trouble in the even of a fall, for instance, the ability to react".

Interesting... repeated box jumps, dead lifts, snatches, etc apparently is part the training regime for power. Even harder stuff than I've been doing LOL. Oh boy..

Oh, got ya. I race mountain bikes and there is a trend every year in the race results that indicate the fastest class of racers are the 40-45 class. Not exactly sure why that is but at 39 y/o I am encouraged by that news. I recently finished 16th out of 100 racers in the last 30 mile race of the year. I came to the conclusion that to crack the top 10 I need to strengthen muscles that are not built up through cycling alone.

There was a whole treadmill piece
I did not mention, involved increasing
intensity/grade and measuring
heartrate. I completed that test
never went above 115 in heartrate
earning a "well above average" rating

FWIW

dude those numbers are awesome. If you want to increase your verticle leap do plyometrics, or I suppose, play a lot of B-ball.
