Songwriter(s). Or arranger in Steve Vai and other cases.

I think the greats (Beatles, Zeppelin, The Who) all proved that its not one great thing that makes a band. Its about every part.

i'm not a music expert, or genius in music, but over the last few yrs, in listening to the bands that are "put up there in the top pantheon of rock", i will say the one key element that strikes me that is over looked is how F***ing good the drummer is.
i dont' think i ever noticed that in all the yrs listened to led zeppelin...it wasn't until i got the LZ dvd a few yrs ago, how much bonham drove that band. his drumming was just soooo good. this may not be a revelation to most, but for me (a dumb guitar player) it was a light bulb moment.
the other bands that i discovered on that much after i had been exposed to their music was the who (k. moon) and nivana (grohl)....oh also the beatles (i was listening to strawberry fields...love the ringo drumming on that...)

obviously, the co-component to that is YOU HAVE TO WRITE GREAT SONGS. that's not always the easy part...
my 2 cents....

I'm going to take good songs as a given for having a good band since that is obvious. But outside of that, the drummer makes the band. My drummer makes it SO easy to play that I barely have to think. I never have to remember where a chorus is coming, he just takes it there. He guides the dynamics, etc. and pulls new ideas out of me that I never thought I would have had just by changing up his groove.

Our old singer was appalled that I would say the drummer was the most important part of the band. That's probably one reason he is our OLD singer.

Everything, but if you have sub par drumming, you'll never get anywhere on a serious level.

IMAGE. Really, a good manager and producer will help greatly distributing that image, but if you dont have an image people can purchase you wont sell music or tickets.

Drums.

Had you worded the thread "most important part of a band" the answer may be different but the best song in the world still needs to beat to be a rock song.
