My latest Youtube addiction

These really set fire to my imagination: Street views taken around 1905.

There are a bunch to be found. I've always been fascinated that era anyway and to see actual footage is astounding.

Here are just three:

San Francisco, 1905. Taken on a trolley car going down Market Street. Before the fire. Every man wears a hat.
In Old Frisco

Barcelona, 1905. Another trolley view, only walkers and bicyclists are continually playing chicken with it. What a beautiful city.
Barcelona

Berlin, 1905-36. Before it was flattened in WW2, Berlin was a huge city. Here are some views leading up to the coming of the Nazis.
The old Berlin

Very nice. In the San Francisco video you can see both motorized and horse drawn carriages side by side. This was an interesting period of rapid change. If you ever have the time or inclination, go to your local library and see if it has the Sears catalogs from 1900 thru 1915 or so. It's interesting to witness the horse carriage industry try to compete with the motorized carriage indistry by increasingly offering more luxurious appointments as options and standard equipment on the horse drawn carriages. Also, pay attention to the medicinal items in the catalog. For example, skin creams guaranteed to wash away cancer or enhance breast size. Electro shock devices to cure a myriad of maladies, etc. The FDA would have had a cow!

Sure were a lot of animals in the city. I can't imagine the smell.

The Berlin one is tops - look at the 2nd Reich! Kaiser's men. And a glimpse of the poor, also. Fascinating.
