Our band needs a PA.....some help please!
Wasnt sure where to list this.......with the departure of our bass player went the PA system so with our band restructuring we need a PA.....we are not looking for anything too elaborate. We do not do this for a living.....and primarily need it for smaller rooms (will rent and hire soundguy for larger or outdoor)
Please help a newbie to this type of equipment as I don't really know anything except we obviously need it!! lol Would you suggest: Powered speakers and mixer Mixer/ power amp/ speakers Mixer with power amp/ speakers Any input that will make this less painful would be appreciated........ Thanks in advance |

The mackie 450's are a great choice, and yes a mixing board with built in EFX's and how many channels yo need. It also depends on what size clubs your playing in. Id say two SM450's and two floor monitors should do. You can find tons of this stuff on ebay and craigs list, dont forget mikes, stands and cables.

I don't know about powered mains, but I just picked up a Carvin powered mixer for a great price new on Ebay...8 channels and 3 power amps. May be worth a look.

Thanks......we have mics. The store recommended powered speakers and a board ......but wanted to know from you guys out there what the best sounding, easiest combination was.....
What was recommended was 2 harbinger hp115 2-ways at 500 watts each and behringer evodesk sx2442fx......with onboard efx..... Is this the way to go or recommendations?? |

The Mackie SRM's are a good bang for the buck, and sound most excellent. Every few weeks one of these types of threads pop up. According to several (I haven't A/B'd them personally) the newer QSC powered speakers sound even better than the Mackies. I think they may be a bit cheaper too. Yep, two mains, two monitors, mics, stands, cables, and a mixer. Depending on how many channels you need, how many vocalists there are in the group.

What ever p.a you get , don't blow it up trying to make it do what it can't do. The optomistic "power mix" will last about 18 minits.

Mackie's are hard to beat, unless there is something else out there I have not heard. All the club bands I know of like them so far. Good luck.

Whatever you decide, I'd only suggest that you not go cheap just to save a few bucks. It's FOH sound and only as good as the weakest link in the chain.
BTW... what was the set up you were using before? FWIW... We've got a Mackie 1604VLZ board, EAW mains and Crown XLS power amps with some decent monitors and a few rack fx. Sometimes a PITA compared to a board with powered speakers, but the sound is better IMHO.

How many singers do you guys have? Do you need to run separate monitor mixes? What is your budget? Do you have any experience running a sound system?
For simple and great sounding, I would go with some powered speakers. A pair for the mains, and as many as you need for monitors. Don't skimp on cables. The mixer you choose will depend on how many inputs you need, and if you need separate monitor mixes. Most boards have at least one, I would buy one that had 4 monitor sends. A powered mixer and a few speakers could be a good idea for you too, but the speakers won't be running bi-amped like they would be in powered speakers. Suggested brands: Lower-Mid end: Peavey, Yamaha Club Mid to high end: Yorkville, JBL, EV, QSC Hope this helps. dk |

We did it for a couple years (bars) with a Soundcraft gigrac 1000w Powered Mixer (PA) and the JBL JRX100's (15"'s). Sounds good. Now I have 2 QSC K12 and a Yamaha mixer...sounds freakin killer!

just a few questions.what is your budget?what are you putting through it?just vocals?i my self i would not be happy with the bottom level stuff,it usually sounds like poo and will not hold up.do yourself a favor and at least go with the peavy or yorkville, mackie.powered head and some speakers on a stick work well, powered speakers work well too.they are just harder to lift on to the stands becuse of weight.good luck

I'd stay away from the Harbinger stuff- poorly made and they sound like shite- you get what you pay for in this arena. Mackie is worth the extra dough- Yorkville makes incredible stuff, but its pricey. The powere Mackie head w/ passive speakers is a good option too.

I'd go with Mixer/ power amp/ speakers.
More flexible (though a little bit annoying to set up) If you don't want to spend too much on this, go with yamaha (a least for the mixer, I own severals yamahas, never had any problems). |

My band has used the JBL PRX series and a Yamaha digital mixer for the last couple of years with great results.
PRX512M tops and PRX518S subs. We use the EON series for monitors. We use the Yamaha mixer because one of the guys owned it, but there are others that would work well also. We use a sound company for larger gigs like you do, but for smaller rooms this system has been great. |

Ok....to answer some questions
4 vocals 2 guitars 1 bass 1 drummer 1 keys..... Most of the time it will be the 4 singers miced and the keys through the board, but with the option to mic the guitar amps for better sound and maybe trigger drums if we want..... I looked at the mackies recommended and they are only 12's .......I think we need 15's no? I am leaning towards the powered speakers so as to not need multiple power amps.......or a powered board would be limiting too wouldnt it? We dont want to go platinum here, but also I do believe you get what you pay for and want something that is going to sound really good.....so not against going used...... |
