Trainwreck Express on full band cover tune demo

For tonal comparisons I know most of you have seen my Youtube clips and/or heard my CD of original music. However I've hardly ever posted clips playing traditional cover tunes through these amps. I thought folks here might be interested in hearing some standard cover band stuff using this type of amplifier.

Along with my sideman and solo work I also have a cover band that plays Classic Country to Grunge Rock. I recently posted 8 cover tunes on the band's Myspace page link below. I kept the demo to just one guitar track, so it's an honest representation of our "power trio" plus front man. I'll admit though I usually use one of my TW clones "live" not my original.

This is my original '89 Express, and the amp was set the same throughout with all knobs on 1/2 except the treble on 1pm plus the full bright switch on. Marshall 4x12 w/G12Ms. Historic LP, Relic Strat, and 80's style parts strat on the last track. No pedals on any of the 8 tunes except for a Wah on the last track, and I just turned the guitar down for cleans. I used one Royer ribbon mic right up at the grill. There was some light reverb, delay, EQ, and chorus added here and there during mixdown. I should point out that even on the ballads the amp is still reasonably quiet, even though the knobs were set in a fairly high gain setting throughout and never changed.

Hope you enjoy listening!

Great stuff,
Do you use an attenuator live?

I've played many gigs without any attenuator, however lately I've been using a Hotplate at -4 or -8 db. That said, I'm on the next list for a Phaustine Phantom.

On this demo recording I didn't use an attenuator.

Glen,

Sounds great, as always.

Quick advice on the demo. Your singer's good, but give him a break......pull him back in the mix a wee bit. He's REALLY dry and out-front. Not very flattering.

cheers!

I agree and in a day or so you will probably hear redone mixes up. I now know, don't do mixes when you're stopped up with a head cold!

I can't wait to hear the remix.
I find it so hard to believe the clean and gain sounds can be so close in volume. I really have to find a good express clone and give it a whirl.

I was fortunate enough to play Ginger (liverpool) a few times and was always blown away by the tone. The only thing that ever held me back from some sort of clone etc..was the need for something more versatile.

I guess I just wasn't thinking about it right.

Killer playing and tones. I'd go see you.

I just remixed all the tunes and uploaded them. Some of them are a little longer, ala less editing. I lowered the vocals a tad and made things just a bit less dry overall. I tweaked the guitar just a little bit too.

Also someone mentioned the guitar volume being quite even from clean to dirty. Yes Wrecks are very very good at that, but keep in mind in this demo I gain ride alot of it to smooth it out even more.

I should mention the trick I used on the Chorus on 3 of the tunes. I recorded all guitar dry straight in (except for the wah) and worked the guitar knobs for clean to dirty. After tracking I ran the guitar tracks back out of the computer interface into an old Boss Dimension C pedal (purple, w/ 4 silver buttons) then back into the computer in stereo. Then I mixed it in where I wanted it.

All the mixing was done "in the box" (PC) using SONAR 8.5 with UAD-1 plugins. I also had one lone outboard processor on a hardware insert, an old Lexicon PCM60 reverb.

Thanks Glen, always enjoy hearing the Trainwreck and how amazing, dynamic and toneful of a amp that it is.

Hey maybe you can do a Les Paul shootout sometime into the Trainwreck.

Your real 59 against the new 50th Anniversary LP standard.

I may have to look into doing that next year. Not sure if I know anyone with a 50th Anniversary LP nearby. I'll ask around!

That said, I do have an '03 Historic Blacktop R7 (w/ Brazilian fretboard) which is what I'm playing in these cover band demos along with 2 different strats. My reissue LP is stock except for old Centralab 500k pots and Russian caps.

I've been a fan of yours for a while now. These covers were great to hear and your band does a great job, I'd love to hear you live! If you ever make it up to Pittsburgh, be sure to send me a PM!
I don't think that there's anything lacking in your tone or in your playing.
