Impedance mismatch question

Hey Guys,

If i run my 15 watt tube amp at 8 ohms into a 16 ohm cab, will this potentially cause any problems for my amp's OT?

The reason I ask is because I'm thinking about getting an attenuator (used for sale) that is set to 8 ohms. If I set my amp to 8 ohms, run into the 8 ohm attenuator, then into my 2x12 cab (wired at 16 ohms), what can I expect?

I've already done some searches on the subject. Some say a one-step mismatch (as described as above) is fine and may actually sound good (lower volume, more gain). Others say absolutely not to do it.

Thoughts?

...the real answer lies in which attenuator you buy because IT will have specifications and limitations that must "fit" between the guitar amp output and the the speaker(s) you use.

Alessandro Muzzle.

I was thinking about putting it between the Alessandro amp and a 16 ohm 2x12 cab.

What's the amp? Vintage Fenders are designed to tolerate a mismatch. Marshalls are said to blow transformers simply at the mention of a mismatch. It's a subject that no one can agree on. Basically do it at your own risk.

8 ohm tranny into 16 ohm cab... not optimum, but ok... 8 ohm tranny into 4 ohms, not so good.

Due to flyback voltage, speaker impedance higher than the amp's impedance is more risky to the output transformer than the speaker impedance being lower than the amp's impedance...but one impedance speaker step upward mismatch is usually ok (unless the OT is a cheapo design).

This board badly needs a FAQ sticky section.
#1 should be 'homage to ohmage.'

I see what you are saying but a lower impedance works the tranny harder than it would into a higher impedance. I always get confused between Tube and Solid State amplification... I know there are differing opinions on the subject.
