Thumbs up Zvex Box of Rock

Just picked one up. I would say it sounds as good as my JCM800, but honestly I think it might actually sound a little better. My 2205 was always just a little bit grainy unless I had it turned up. No biggie, but the pedal's smoother at reasonable volumes.

NICE pedal, in case anyone is wondering. Marshall in a box? Yeah, you betcha.

I also have one. It's my go-to boost/distortion.

Also post your love here:

I haven't really tried anything else. I was really looking very specifically for the Marshall in a box thing to complement my Fuchs. I have a JCM800 that I'd really like to sell, but I just couldn't bring myself to doing it. I think I'm there with the BoR. I need to fiddle with it some more. If it takes a Butler tube driver as well as my 800, the 800 will go for sale. Impressive little pedal.

I really liked the boost side of the BOR, but the dirty little secret sounded better to me. Have you tried the DLS?

I tried one. I prefer the BoR. The DLS sounded a bit more like my JCM800. A little bit grainier. You know, it really comes down to taste here because the DLS was a fine sounding pedal. I just thought the BoR was a little bit smoother and meatier. The DLS was a little more modern sounding. This is just how it sounded to my ears played through my equipment. Keep in mind that I have a very unusual setup. I'm playing mainly single coils (mostly my Tele) through a Fuchs ODS50. Sometimes I play a Strat or a 335 through there too. Again, not really what most pedal designers have in mind when they think "Marshall" guy.

Im sorry but I do not see the connection between the JCM800 and the BOR. I have the BOR and had the 800. Nothing alike to my ears. I like the BOR and have kept it cause it has grwat open chord crunch. But when I record it to protools my MP MRD , Carl Martin Plexitube and Toneczr openhaus always beat it, especially if any palm muting is envolved. Its just to flabby and the breakup is very square like, to my ears.

I never said it sounded like the 800. I think I said I preferred it to the 800, and that it definitely has that Marshall-in-a-box quality. It's more like a Plexi or a JTM.

Zvex BOR was designed to emulate a Marshall JTM45.

dare i say... i'm not a fan of the BoR.... i've tried 3 different units, 1 handwired.... all were just a little too brittle for me. i don't know. the DLS is smooth as all anything, like that pedal a BUNCH. best marshall in a box: Lovepedal ProValve.... (ducks his head and heads for cover)

Maybe I should try another one then. The DLS I tried may have had a dead battery or something else wrong. Smooth wasn't the first thought that came to mind

So many pedals, so few patch cables...

i do have to say... the battary in the DLS makes a HUGE difference. just plug it up on a PP2 and sag the voltage, you can hear all different tones in there. but full juice on the 9v is real nice. higher than 9v can get even nicer (depending on your tastes). But again: the BoR may work better in your circumstance than the DLS, and the SHO side of the BoR is pretty awesome.

I have never tried the ProValve. I have had both BORs and a DLS(V1). I prefer the OCD (V4) for those types of sounds. The BOR is a cool little pedal though. Especially since it is a 2 in one and both sides sound great alone as well as together.....plus it looks damn cool.

I LOVE the BoR, but with my Dr Z Route 66, which is kinda/sorta JTM45-ish.

I also dug it with an AC30.

BF amps? Not so much.
