Okay, explain the Colorsound! I'm dying to hear about it.

(And wait until everyone sees that pedal we came up with. Beautiful craziness!)

Well, like this. I have loved Jeff becks Wired forever. Come Dancing, Led boots, Blue wind, awesoime. Wired is the perfect example of how vicious and beautiful single coils can be.

I just wanted a piece of that. And I have found good use for the overdriver in my rig. Just the EQ strengths are worth the price of admission.

I know there are a few well known clones already. Throbak for one. And it's a very nice and inovative unit from what I can see. I just wanted it my way for my board. Maybe you will too. Choice is good. -p

PTD CSO (colorsound overdriver) Yes, It's been done before. Not like this. Treble, Bass and volume only. 3 distinct tuned flavors of the Overdriver.

Mini switch goes between: Left: Clean boost with EQ or Right: OD with EQ / Fuzz with EQ

Side switch selects between Overdrive and fuzz.

Switch on the fly! I have matched the volumes of the effects. A first.

A simple, very effective two band EQ, Clean boost or cut, Overdrive and Great vintage fuzz with EQ.

Meticulous PTP wiring with selected transistors.

after 5 minutes with it, you will not be able to live without it.

That thing sounds great! And I love how "neutral" it can sound!

Web site

Do you have a web site where I can find out more about your pedals? I am in interested in the CSO. Almost bought your PE RX Overdriver but now I can't find it anymore.

I'm hoping to have a real site up soon. My myspace page is a running joke. A cluster f' to be sure.

Here's a link to my manufacturers thread here on TGP:
http://www.thegearpage.net/board/sho...d.php?t=591664
It's very up to date on everything I do.

The PE Rx overdriver sold. For the record I used nothing from it. The CSO is a hybrid of colorsound designs.

Hey Mr.T, the drop loop is a work in progress. I did a quick proto and sent it to Mark C. It seems to be rig dependant and worked differently for him.
I have some refining to do there.

Happy Sat. everyone.

PE RXOverdriver vs PTD CSO

OK, I guess the dumb but necessary question is this. Can your CSO do everything that the PE unit does and then some, or is it a different flavor altogether? I wanted an RX Overdriver to do some Wilco sounds since that's the pedal Tweedy uses but I would be interested in yours if it can do those sounds. (IE basic rythym on "At Least That's What You Said" or on Jeff Becks's Wired album.

I bought the Throbak ODB but that did not seem to do it, at least with my rig, so I've become sort of skeptical.

Please let me know your thoughts.

First, the rythym of "at least" sure sounds like the gain maxxed (or just short for OD) and some vol. knob rolloff. Then as it progresses Tweedy rolls up for more agression. So the answer is yes to Wilco.
How Beck used it on Wired? I think he boosted very driven marshalls etc... That might be my favorite single coil tones. Still my fav. Beck ever. Even with all the fusion. (my friends thought this bizzarre for a 15 year old Zep, Sabbath, Rainbow, Lizzy, Kiss, Heart fan)

The reason I lost the gain knob and tuned the settings was;
The gain pot say 10k or 2k, is very subtle until 12:00 where it starts to have some body. That's where I tuned my boost section.

Next, the gain has a point where it starts yielding a ugly crackling breakup around 75% up. Then a little overdrive then the fuzz. I preset the micro switch on the side to go between OD or fuzz so, Top switch selects boost or od/fuzz dependenig on the side switch setting.

I find those 50-70%% settings useless unless into a very hot amp at witch point the noise is off the chart and the subtleties are lost. And it's too touchy to dial in easily anyway. At 90% theres a nice OD.
Gain Maxxed you have a wonderful MK I, MK II ish sound with just enough sustain, and EQ. This makes for a very versitile overdrive or fuzz that sounds great into clean, edgy, bright, dark or driven amps.

So...... I tuned the best boost tone and the OD/fuzz and matched thier levels so you can switch on the fly. ( others have a ungodly volume boost when cranking the gain into fuzz)
Use your foot on the mini switch if you like! The boost has more than enough push to overdrive your front end in a musical way even with a gainy amp.

As you can see I redid the circuit layout to fit into a 1590B. It's a lot of pedal in that little box! I just like pedals better in that size and height. Perfect. And the brushed finish will age gracefully.

As far as the PE box, I think the gain knob was way touchy (2k) and the trannies were pretty harsh when maxxed. There were some tone changes I liked better on the original colorsound powerdriver too. Box too big with jacks on the back I don't like. Just my honest opinion cause you asked. P.E. is a fine builder to be sure.

The Throbak unit looks very nice and has a great reputation though I've never had one here.

Thanks!

Thanks for your thoughtful reply!

I am glad to meet another fan of Beck's Wired album. Perhaps its a mix of having few friends or having weird musical tastes but I had not met anyone else that digs Wired like me. I can relate to your feeling strange about linking it despite being a Zep, Sabbath, Heart, Etc. fan when you heard it as I was too. In fact I would not have even known about it if it weren't for the Mighty KLOS 95.5 (Los Angeles) that used to play entire sides of great records each Sunday night back in the day. I was lucky enough to tune in on one glorious night and capured it on my Aiwa cassette deck. Still have the tape! Awesome stuff. Beck still jams of course, and I was also lucky to see his bassist Tal Wilkenfeld play with Wayne Krantz at a small Bake Potato show in LA some time back. I was not sure whether to listen or to watch! So many great players out there these days!!

Well I look forward to checking out your finalized design of the CSO when you finish it.

John
